This is a role that requires a multi-disciplinary team approach to solving problems and patient challenges. "That's not my job" or "someone else can do it" is not in our team vocabulary because we are here to be of support to each other. Position Description

Provides financial counseling to patients to help resolve their patient financial obligations and minimize financial toxicity This is a non-exempt, hourly position.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides financial counseling to help patients and parents reduce their financial barriers in tactical ways, including optimizing insurance coverage, establishing budget plans and identifying suitable financial assistance programs.
  • Assists patients with completion of Charity Care and other assistance applications, including providing application instructions and following up with patients on the requested documentation. Reviews completeness of applications and submit for approval.
  • Assists patients with the completion of co-pay assistance, drug assistance, and other available programs to mitigate their financial obligations.
  • Answers patient and inter-department inquiries on patient balances and billing statements.
  • Collaborates with organizational Social Workers and other departments to help patients access internal and external financial assistance resources.
  • Follows up and reports the status of patient delinquent accounts based on the established self-pay collection guidelines. Documents each collection action with clear notes.
  • Identifies collection issues or trends and escalates them to the appropriate supervisor when assistance is needed.
  • Assists with composing patient notices.
  • Reviews, prepares and submits patient accounts for collections.
  • Reviews patient account balances to properly post patient payments against related receivables.
  • Submits write-off and adjustment requests.
  • Investigates and submits refund requests.
  • Maintains the strictest confidentiality; adhere to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  • Submits reports as directed by supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a Patient/Insurance accounts receivable role or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in tertiary patient care setting involving interactions with a variety of medical services, contact with patients and families, and interaction with physicians.
  • Experience in assisting patients with drug copay assistance programs and budget plans.
  • Experience in oncology, hematology, rheumatology, orthopedics, physical therapy, or radiology.
  • Patient Navigator credentialed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of business office procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic medical billing/collection, medical coding, and third-party operating procedures and practices.
  • Well organized and detail oriented.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft applications including, but not limited to Word and Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasionally required to stand and walk.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: English. Spanish speaking preferred, but not required.
