As a Port Captain, you will play a vital role in overseeing and coordinating maritime operations for a fleet of Jones Act ATBs. Your responsibilities will include ensuring safe and efficient vessel movements, managing port facilities, and maintaining compliance with applicable regulations. This position requires a strong understanding of maritime operations, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and oversee vessel movements within ports, including arrivals, departures, and berthing operations
Plan and allocate resources to ensure timely and efficient handling of vessels, cargo, and personnel
Monitor weather conditions, navigational charts, and port restrictions to ensure safe operations
Communicate with ship captains to provide guidance, updates, and support as needed.
Manage infrastructure, facilities, and equipment to ensure optimal utilization and maintenance
Collaborate with terminal operators and other service providers to ensure smooth cargo handling operations
Monitor and enforce compliance with safety regulations, security protocols, and environmental standards
Identify and implement improvements to enhance efficiency, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
Safety and Compliance:
Promote and enforce adherence to safety procedures and regulations within the port area
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions
Ensure compliance with relevant maritime regulations, port bylaws, and international standards
Investigate and report incidents, accidents, and near-misses, and implement preventive measures.
Team Leadership:
Supervise and lead a team of port operations personnel
Provide guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure a skilled and motivated workforce
Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement among team members.
Position Requirements
Possess a USCG Merchant Mariners License, Chief Officer Unlimited, or Master Towing Vessels license preferred
5-10 years of vessel operations experience of barges or tankers.
Working knowledge of modern navigation software
Familiar with regulatory requirements and vessel inspections
Experience supervising a large group of employees, training and employee development
Microsoft Office skills
40% travel to vessels (willing to stand weekend/evening duty)
