Position Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Power Scholars Academy is a summer learning loss prevention and academic intervention program. We support scholars from all over San Francisco and San Mateo County in developing their academic foundation, as well as social emotional and critical thinking skills. Over the course of the summer, scholars spend 3 hours per day, four days per week with credentialed teachers reviewing math and literacy concepts to help catch them up to grade level and prepare them for the year ahead.

Instructional Coaches provide individualized support and feedback to classroom teachers and teaching assistants to improve overall instruction in ELA and math and student engagement and achievement. The Instructional Coach/PSA Teacher is responsible for teaching PSA cohorts in addition to completing Instructional Coach tasks.

Urban Services YMCA is hosting PSA at:

  • James Denman Middle - 241 Oneida Ave, San Francisco, CA 94112
  • Starr King Elementary - 1215 Carolina St, San Francisco, CA 94107
  • John O'Connell High - 2355 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Salary Range: $30 - $68 per hour

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and teaching credential required.
  • At least 3-5 years working in an urban public school with elementary school children, preferably at the host school.
  • State certification required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with various stakeholders, including scholars, families, and Power Scholars Academy and district colleagues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research-based instructional strategies that engage all students across subject areas (ELA and math).
  • Content area expertise in ELA, math or both.
  • Ability to identify staff learning needs, and design and deliver appropriate individualized or group professional development and coaching to meet needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to inform student groupings and differentiate instruction.
  • Strong working knowledge of instructional shifts necessary for alignment to the Common Core State Standards.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adjust and adapt instructional strategies swiftly given the short duration of summer programs (4 – 6 weeks).
  • Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team.
  • Previous relevant experience designing and delivering individualized and group professional development
  • Experience in the use of technology (computer/internet) for assessment and instruction.
  • Committed to the goals of the program and approach.
  • Love and respect for children.
  • Belief and commitment to the Y’s mission and values.
  • Fingerprint background check clearance.
  • TB test clearance for programs on school sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Previous relevant experience as head or assistant head of instruction.
  • Previous relevant experience in coaching of instructional staff.
