Summary 

The Senior Strategist, Government Relations manages outreach to a wide range of stakeholders in Greater DC Metropolitan Area on behalf of the Association and its senior leaders. This position is an important contributor to the public affairs function, helping to guide and facilitate external communications efforts that promote understanding of and engagement with the goals of the Association. This position collaborates with internal stakeholders to ensure the Association broad ‘reach’ to a variety of constituencies to promote – and inform – the organization’s work. 

Principal Accountabilities 


Domestic Advocacy

Assist Associate Senior Director, Government Affairs (“Director”), in advocating INTA’s priorities regarding pending bills and new bills to be introduced into Congress, including:

  • Preparing one-pagers and other leave-behind materials
  • Drafting talking points for use with Members of Congress
  • Organizing INTA members with similar objectives to form coalitions
  • Draft speeches for Director
  • Liaise with Congressional staff, U.S. Government (USG) agency employees, and other associations to host events on behalf of the Congressional Trademark Caucus (CTC), including:
  • Developing new content for CTC events, with a focus on fresh angles not previously explored
  • Prepping speech writers in executive and legislative branches in advance of CTC events
  • Drafting articles to highlight CTC event

Coordinate and host Members of Congress, USPTO, and other speakers for virtual and in-person “Trademarks 101” events, including:

  • Developing a base of INTA members to feature in local events
  • Preparing INTA members and Congressional staff for the events
  • Locating local organizations to cohost events to ensure high participation by constituents
  • Prepare social media postings and news articles to highlight advocacy


International Advocacy

Assist Director to advocate INTA’s priorities in international negotiations of Free Trade Agreements, including:

  • Streamlining massive data sets for targeted advocacy
  • Ensuring consistency across jurisdictions in INTA’s advocacy
  • Creating new opportunities for interaction with trade negotiators and other relevant stakeholders (such as embassy personnel)
  • Assist Director in managing and growing international coalitions for targeted advocacy
  • Draft media articles as necessary


INTA PAC

  • Assist with implementation of recommendations in the yearly Reports of the INTA PAC Board of Governors
  • Using independent judgment, gather and analyze data, report findings, and then recommend specific strategies for targeted outreach to increase donations to INTA PAC
  • Draft talking points, presentations, and written materials for INTA PAC and Capitol Club recruitments efforts

Assist Director in all aspects of hosting world-class INTA PAC receptions, including:

  • Coordinating Congressional and corporate speakers for INTA PAC receptions
  • Preparing all written materials for INTA PAC receptions, such as invitations, updates, slide decks, run of show, and ensuring that INTA PAC Board of Governors and members of Capitol Club are timely updated on details
  • Coordinate with INTA’s political consultants to plan perks for Capitol Club members


Organizational Duties

  • Plan and execute regular IP Associations meetings in DC
  • Assume role of staff liaison for Director for selected committees/subcommittees
  • Assist with Annual Meeting and Leadership Meeting planning
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director


Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, economics, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ related work experience, including working directly with legislators and their staff.
  • Prior staffer from Capitol Hill or someone with government relations/lobbying experience, IP background preferred
  • Deep knowledge/experience with various layers of government and third-party stakeholders, including demonstrated understanding of state and national legislative processes.
  • Must have demonstrated experience building and managing relationships with a range of stakeholders on an organization’s behalf, ideally using contact relationship management databases or tools.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to synthesize complex streams of information and interpret nuanced reputational issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with various constituencies to guide competing interests along a common path.
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to represent the Association and describe its activities and areas of emphasis with clarity, responsiveness, and integrity. Must be collaborative and enjoy working in a team environment.
  • Exceptional diplomacy, tact, discretion, ability to multitask, and ability to agreeably navigate myriad points of view.
  • Position requires a willingness to travel 20% of the time.
