Job Description

Grace is seeking a Sr. Technician Specialist to join the SC R&D polymer formulations and processing team at our Columbia site. In this role you will be responsible for formulating, extruding, and testing resin samples for evaluation. Collaboration and communication along with a focus on safety will be critical for success as you will work as part of a larger team in support of Grace’s UNIPOL® and catalyst businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a safety-centric culture, fully engaging in all aspects of corporate and work group specific safety initiatives.
  • Warehouse Operations
    • Receive incoming shipments and notify recipients
    • Operate a narrow aisle forklift and pallet jack to store, retrieve and move drums / samples for project work
    • Record and report sample locations for inventory purposes
  • Formulations
    • Prepare and extrude resin samples by blending with solid and liquid additives
    • Repackage and distribute samples for analysis
    • Operation of equipment related to formulations (extruders, blenders, injection molder and more.)
    • Perform simple resin analysis (melt flow, yellowness index.)
    • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory and processing instrumentation and equipment.
    • Demonstrate a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.
    • Maintain good housekeeping in all work areas.
Physical Requirements And Environment

  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials

Required Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent with some college level course work in related field (science and math) and minimum of 5 years experience in a laboratory or pilot plant environment OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (science and math) with minimum 1 year of experience in a laboratory or pilot plant environment
  • Ability to work as a team with a dynamic group of co-workers.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 55 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to obtain a forklift license (we will provide training) and operate a forklift, narrow aisle reach truck and pallet jack.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work independently according to priorities with minimal daily supervision.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders.
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of plastics compounding and testing.
  • Experience in operating molding and extrusion equipment independently and efficiently (with training). Effectively managing the full cycle of operation, start-up through shutdown.
  • Trained in use of basic statistics to analyze data and Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
