POSITION: SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE

JOB SUMMARY: The school nurse assists in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools. Incumbent receives general direction from the school principal.

REPORTS TO: Principal and School Health Supervisor.

Education, Certification, And Experience

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  • Graduate of a diploma, program, holding an associate degree or baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Maryland.
  • Prior experience as a school nurse preferred.
  • Valid Maryland driver’s license.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.) At the time of application, the candidate must have:

  • Ability to understand and communicate with both verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to learn operation of office machines and audio-visual devices.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Serves as Substitute School Nurse for Calvert County Public Schools.
  • Administers medications from physicians’ orders (orally, parentally, nasogastric, or gastrostomy tube).
  • Maintains medication records and reports adverse reactions or contraindications to the physician or County Health Nurse (CHN).
  • Manages and provides health room services, including first aid and CPR, according to established procedures.
  • Performs medical procedures ordered by students’ physicians (catheterization, ostomy care, suctioning, glucose testing, and other approved procedures).
  • Provides guidance and counseling in the area of health to students, staff, and parents according to professional standards.
  • Maintains accurate nurse’s notes and records, including summaries of services provided.
  • Reports all cases of diagnosed or suspected communicable disease to CHN.
  • Maintains an inventory of health room supplies.
  • Reports environmental conditions which may adversely affect the safety and health of the students and staff to CHN.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the principal and reviewed with CHN.

OTHER DUTIES: Performs related work as required or assigned by the building principal or designee and reviewed with the CHN.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires light physical effort. Tasks may include assisting children and moving equipment.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS: None.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Temporary Substitute assignment. Hours reimbursed at current substitute nurse pay rate. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.

State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
