Job Description

The Sustainability Consultant acts with a large amount of discretion and independence and is responsible for development, coordination and implementation of sustainability programs, standards and policies at the Wexner Medical Center (WMC). This position will focus on program development around the institutional Resource Stewardship Sustainability goals for the WMC with primary focus on recycling and waste reduction (determining funding, project definition, staff training and program management), carbon neutrality, and the purchase of environmentally preferable products. The Sustainability Consultant develops tactics to integrate sustainability principles into the operational functions of the WMC; utilizes in-depth knowledge of operations, in-house expertise, peer institution practices, industry trends and innovations and other resources to develop ideas to advance WMC?s sustainability efforts, and evaluate opportunities for technical feasibility, cost effectiveness, and acceptability by the WMC community; works with and communicates on a regular basis with WMC departments, Ohio Hospital Association and other relevant entities to establish and promote sustainability policies and programs that maximize the environmental and financial performance of the WMC, establish WMC as a national and international leader in the field of sustainability, and publicizes WMC?s sustainability efforts within and outside of the Ohio State community; develops annual WMC sustainability goals, establishes baselines, creates annual benchmarking reports and documents annual progress; assists with WMC Sustainability Council meetings and WMC Green Team meetings; monitors WMC?s sustainability performance; identifies opportunities for grant funding, rebates, or other savings programs; speaks at local, regional and national conferences; and coordinates with faculty to integrate sustainability initiatives into curriculum and research. Requires successful completion of a criminal background check.

Required Qualifications

For Hire: Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, management or science; minimum of six years of experience implementing environmental, energy or sustainability programs; leadership experience in environmental initiatives, resource management, and teaching/presenting information; significant experience with water, waste, and other sustainability aspects of conservation in a large organization. DESIRED: Masters degree in a related field. Experience in a health care environment; understanding of environmental best practices in the health care industry.
