Role Summary

50 South Capital (www.50southcapital.com) is the private equity investment group within Northern Trust, one of the world’s largest asset management firms, with over $1.4 trillion in assets under management. The firm has a global presence with offices in 24 U.S. states, and across 22 locations in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. 50 South Capital’s private equity group makes primary, secondary, and direct co-investments in buyout, venture capital and private credit funds and companies in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The team has extensive experience investing in the industry and has been led by its founding partners since 2000. The firm oversees over $14.1 billion in assets and is experiencing rapid growth.

50 South Capital is seeking to add a professional in their Chicago headquarters to be part of a growing investment team primarily to source, diligence and execute secondaries investments in both LP and GP-led transactions, as well as preferred equity financings. This individual will have the ability to contribute to investment decision making across all of 50 South Capital’s funds and strategies, including primaries, secondaries, co-investments and private credit. In addition, this individual will be responsible for assisting in fundraising efforts, portfolio monitoring and other special projects.

Key Responsibilities Of The Position

  • Leading the underwriting for traditional LP secondaries transactions, GP-led continuation vehicles and preferred equity financings across buyout, venture/growth and private credit asset classes.
  • Performing quantitative analyses, including single company LBO and fund modelling; conducting market, company and fund manager due diligence; assisting in all aspects of the transaction, including deal selection, pricing analysis, and execution; assisting in transaction documentation and presentations to the investment committee, developing and maintaining proprietary deal and market intelligence; and deal monitoring.
  • Sourcing secondaries transactions, including developing/growing relationships with intermediaries and private equity sponsors.
  • Assisting with business development and investor relations projects, such as maintaining marketing and quarterly performance presentations and creating industry white papers.
  • Participating in portfolio management activities, including tracking the performance of existing investments and developing insights, attending annual investor meetings, monitoring fund leverage facilities and cash/liquidity management.
  • This role involves travel primarily within the US and, occasionally, internationally.

Necessary Knowledge And Skills

  • Strong analytical abilities, including a mastery of financial analysis, discounted cash flow models and valuation techniques.
  • General knowledge about the buyout industry, deal structures, and various players in the buyout and secondaries markets.
  • Secondaries investment or transaction experience strongly preferred (but not required).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with intermediaries, private equity sponsors, industry contacts and limited partners.
  • Self-starter with the ability to initiate and oversee projects to completion.
  • Ability to work in a collegial, team-oriented environment while managing multiple projects.
  • Capacity to present in one-on-one settings and to larger groups.

Necessary Experience And Education

  • Undergraduate degree required.
  • 5-10 years of work experience, preferably in private equity, direct lending, investment banking or consulting; secondaries and/or direct private equity experience preferred.
