Simpson College is seeking a Director of the Writing Center. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Success, the Director is a full-time administrator who works on behalf of Simpson College students by providing writing support at all levels across the campus and curriculum. This position also provides professional development training for students serving as tutors and for faculty teaching all levels of college writing. Additionally, this position will work with the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment to establish clear assessment standards and protocols for Writing Across the Curriculum. This 10-month exempt staff appointment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work with the Associate Dean for Student Success, the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment, the Director of Foundations (First-Year Experience) to set up the Writing Center to support Writing Across the Curriculum;
  • develop and coordinate support for writers of all levels (from first-year to advanced), including students from diverse backgrounds with diverse learning needs;
  • select, train, and supervise undergraduate Writing Consultants (peer tutors) who support students in the first-year experience and other courses each year;
  • supervise day-to-day operations of the Writing Center, including scheduling, payroll, and budgeting;
  • engage with individual faculty, academic departments and college administration in developing the role of the Writing Center in supporting writing at Simpson College;
  • teach one or more sections of ENG 270, Writing Center Practice (1 credit), &/or ENG 275, Writing Center Theory (1-credit) annually to provide Writing Consultant training;
  • provide faculty development in the form of workshops on topics related to writing instruction and assessment; advise the Associate Dean for Student Success on matters of the SWC programs;
  • collaborate with key campus programs and services, such as Center for Academic Resources, First-Year Experience, and Teaching and Learning Center;
  • regularly assess usage, satisfaction, and effectiveness of Writing Center services and programs;
  • create and maintain student and faculty resources to support writing practice and pedagogy;
  • serve on college-wide committees as directed by the Associate Dean for Student Success;
  • engage with professional associations to identify best practices and standards in support of Writing Center program and practices.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree required, PhD preferred, in Composition and Rhetoric, English, ESL Education (concentration in literacy/writing), or a related field.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working in a writing center and/or supervising student employees and managing the day-to-day operations in academic support services.
  • Ability to work effectively without immediate supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively and positively with students, faculty, and staff.
