What do OpenNotes, Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) and Abridge all have in common? They share a mission to eliminate #epistemicinjustice by ensuring access to health information through medical records. Yesterday at #HealthImpact in New York, we saw this mission in action on a panel with Cait DesRoches, DrPH MSc & Chethan Sarabu, MD, FAMIA, FAAP, from OpenNotes, Shahid Shah from Unblock Health, Brian Anderson, MD from Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), and Tina Shah MD MPH from Abridge. Curious about #epistemicinjustice? That was one of my favorite panels OpenNotes! CHAI, OpenNotes, and Abridge are leading the charge against epistemic injustice. That's a fancy way of reminding us that patients don't often have the ability to understand information that affects their lives and "don't always know what they don't know". These were some excellent calls to action from the panel: - Push for policies that mandate easy and immediate patient access to their complete medical records. This includes lobbying for legislative changes and supporting organizations like OpenNotes that promote transparency. Transparent medical records allow patients to use their own AI tools on their own data. - Ensure that AI tools are designed to enhance patient understanding, not just for clinical efficiency. This means developing AI that explains medical information in patient language and provides actionable insights. - Create and distribute interactive apps, videos, and workshops tailored to different literacy levels and languages. - Establish patient advisory boards to get direct feedback on how health information is shared and understood. Use this feedback to continuously improve the design and delivery of medical records and AI tools.
