In honor of Patient Experience Week, here is a reflection on patient- and family-centered care. In my experience, this term is utilized frequently but not always well understood. The Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (IPFCC) defines it as “an approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnership among healthcare providers, patients, and families.” IPFCC additionally describes four core concepts of patient- and family-centered care as:
-Respect and Dignity: Health care practitioners listen to and honor patient and family perspectives and choices. Patient and family knowledge, values, beliefs and cultural backgrounds are incorporated into the planning and delivery of care.
-Information Sharing: Health care practitioners communicate and share complete and unbiased information with patients and families in ways that are affirming and useful. Patients and families receive timely, complete and accurate information in order to effectively participate in care and decision-making.
-Participation: Patients and families are encouraged and supported in participating in care and decision-making at the level they choose.
-Collaboration: Patients, families, health care practitioners, and health care leaders collaborate in policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation; in facility design; in professional education; and in research; as well as in the delivery of care.

Communication techniques can positively impact not only patients' perception of centeredness but their overall health outcomes. 💔💔 Healing Physician Morale: Time for Change! 💪🩺
As a physician community, we must confront an alarming truth—many of us are grappling with moral injury. 😔 This occurs when we find ourselves compelled to act against our own values and moral beliefs. It's heartbreaking to admit, but sometimes we are forced to harm our patients by over-testing, over-ordering, and over-treating. This isn't what we signed up for.
In the current system, we face constant pressure to rush through patient encounters and ignore their concerns to keep our jobs. The toll is immense—we're left morally injured. 😢 It's high time we put an end to this. We must be brave enough to say no and walk away from jobs that don't treat us with respect. We owe it to ourselves and our patients.
We, the physician community, are the true value creators in this system. Without us, the entire healthcare system would crumble. Patients rely on our competence, skills, and most importantly, our compassion. But that compassion has been stifled due to the abuse we endure. This needs to change, and it's in our hands to make it happen. 💪💔
Let's unite and reclaim the essence of why we became doctors—to heal and care for our patients with integrity and compassion. It's time for healing, not just for ourselves but for the entire healthcare ecosystem. Together, we can reshape the system into one that truly puts patients and their well-being first. 🌟🌿
