As someone who's spent over 20 years working with a diverse range of CEOs, I agree with the "lonely" bit. But I disagree with "no one cares". If you are the right kind of CEO, a really smart and visionary one but also a very real and human, and you build the right team around you, and you care not just about P&L but about the people and the climate in the company, then trust me when I tell you people do care about you - and for you. Even if the burden of the final decisions is yours. And they probably care more than you think. When they don't care, it transpires across the board (and at the Board). I wonder what the jewelry industry would look like if it, as a whole, embraced this model in their efforts toward sustainability? I see an over reliance on certifying entities almost like little shields to hide behind. Those certifications don’t hold much value to an educated consumer base that can easily read about the issues with the RJC and the Kimberly Process. Where are the CEOs in the jewelry industry in their shared quest for sustainability? Wouldn’t the industry as a whole benefit from such an initiative as this one? I know the work the IDCA and the Chicago Responsible Jewelry Conference does. I go to those conferences. I don’t see the CEOs or in some cases any representation from the big players in the industry. Why? I’m asking about a board of powerful CEOs from Jewelry, sitting together, on a shared mission to push the industry toward sustainability. Why is this not happening? Open question.
