Happy Pride Month! At FLFCMO, we believe everyone deserves a safe workplace where they can be their authentic selves. As we celebrate this month, we’re heartened to see incremental improvements in LGBTQ+ representation in law firms. According to NALP, the percentage of LGBTQ lawyers has steadily increased since 2002, climbing to 4.5% in 2023. Yet, LGBTQ representation is highest among summer associates and remains particularly slow at the partnership level, increasing just 0.1% in 2023. Despite some progress, there is considerable room for growth. How can we as allies keep advocating for equality in the legal field? It is imperative that law firms, law schools, and attorneys remain committed to inclusion and creating a safe environment for everyone—during Pride Month and every day. The Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal delivered a Judgment in favour of same-sex partnerships, ushering a big step for LGBTQ+ rights in the city. Lisa Wong, Vanessa Duff (née Mitchell) and William Payne look into the Judgment and the implications of this ruling. It is important to note that the case is not yet completely resolved and a final order will be made by the court. The final order is able to modify the declaration meaning the Court could either backtrack or confirm its decision to compel the government to make changes to the Hong Kong law. For the first time ever, Human Rights Campaign is declaring a State of Emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans. Companies with employees in hostile states with restrictive laws need to take these attacks seriously. It’s not enough to protect employees in the workplace. Are you giving employees the option of moving to more LGBTQ-friendly states? Are you opposing local legislation that oppress LGBTQ people? Companies need to adopt LGBTQ public policy strategies if they don’t have one already.
