Alayna Riggins’ Post

Last week I celebrated and cried as my son graduated cum laude from high school. The end of his Orange County Public Schools experience also brought the end of my tenure as chair of the Evans High School Advisory Council (SAC). I held that position for more than four years - before my son ever stepped foot on the campus. The former principal “voluntold” me to join after he saw my passion and commitment to the school as a tutor. I saw my own Washington, D.C., high school in Evans Community Partnership School - one that people disrespected and discounted because of the neighborhood in which it is located. When my son decided to attend Evans’ magnet program - not our zoned school - I knew he would be fine because of its dedicated and caring staff, and because of my involvement in his education. Studies show that students whose parents are actively involved in their school have improved academic performance, better attendance rates, and reduced behavioral issues. The last four-plus years have included COVID Zoom and in-person meetings; minute reviews; musical concerts; sports games; community town halls; Spirit Nights; Senior Awards; and more. Yes, meetings went beyond an hour at times, but the administration always kept us informed and included in activities. What saddened me at times was the lack of parental participation - our school services nearly 2,500 students, and less than 1% of parents showed up at most meetings. But what brought me unexpected joy were the times a student or classmate of my son’s - some whom I didn’t know - would call out my name and wave, or come up and speak to me - because they knew I was there to support and cheer them on. I encourage parents/guardians to get involved in your student’s PTA/PTSA/PTO/ SAC. Don’t just attend the sports events or buy whatever the fundraiser du jour is. Commit to attend meetings; know what’s happening with the funding and programs at your child’s school, especially in high school. Don’t expect your student to inform you about what’s going on, because in this age of social media, on top of their academics and extracurricular activities, they will barely listen and stay informed themselves. Show them and the school administration that you care. Be a recognized face in the place. Trust me, it’ll go a long way with staff, and students, too!
