The world's only digital futurist & speaker - talk to my digital twin | living and breathing cutting-edge technologies to inspire Fortune 500 companies | Global innovation keynote speaker | TED | 5x author
Apple's latest venture into artificial intelligence marks a significant shift in AI's accessibility and personalization. By acquiring 21 AI startups since 2017 and focusing on deep learning, Apple aims to integrate generative AI directly into iPhones and other devices, a move that diverges from cloud-reliant models. Under the veil of typical Apple secrecy, this strategy seeks to embed large language models (LLMs) in mobile devices, challenging the size and power requirements of current AI tech. The innovation could revolutionize user interaction, with AI chatbots and apps operating independently of cloud services. Apple's approach, distinct from Google's and Amazon's cloud-centric strategies, emphasizes personal device empowerment. This strategy resonates with the principle of thinking exponentially, demonstrating a visionary leap in making cutting-edge AI technology a personal, everyday experience. In a world where tech giants often race to the cloud, Apple asks, "Why not keep the intelligence right in your pocket?" Google's Astra is its first AI-for-everything agent | MIT Technology Review: Google is preparing to launch a new AI system called Astra, which it claims will be its most advanced AI assistant to date. This new system, expected to be available later this year, is poised to offer enhanced capabilities such as reasoning, planning, and memory skills. Astra will be accessible through smartphones and possibly desktop computers, with potential for integration into other devices, including smart glasses. This announcement comes in the midst of heightened competition among tech companies to showcase advancements in AI technology. In addition to Astra, Google is also introducing new AI features for its Search platform, including AI overviews that provide concise summaries of search queries and an improved planning function for tasks like meal and travel suggestions. Another new offering, Veo, is a video-generating AI system that allows users more control over cinematic styles. Google's ownership of YouTube gives it an advantage in training generative video models, as evidenced by collaborations with artists such as Donald Glover and Wycleaf Jean. However, the use of existing material from artists in the development of these AI tools has raised concerns about intellectual property rights and compensation.
