I got promoted from Director to SVP in 3 years using one simple trick.
🗣️ I asked for the damn promotions.
Granted, I also *earned* the promotions through my performance.
But I wouldn't have gotten the recognition I deserved if I hadn't painted a clear picture of why I deserved it, and *asked outright*.
And no, it shouldn't have to be this way. But it is. I can count three times that I'd have been skipped over for a promotion if I hadn't advocated for myself.
On the flip side, there have been times I've asked for a promotion and been told, "no, not now." That's OK too.
Even if I didn't get the promotion immediately—that conversation paved the way to get that next bump (or it told me it was time to take my skills elsewhere).
But "if you don't ask, the answer is always no”—
so shoot your shot.
Even a boss that loves you might be too busy or distracted to realize your promotion should be a priority.
So nudge them, remind them, set clear goals together (and crush them!).
Make it easy for them to say yes.
🗣️ And then ask for the damn promotion.
Because that's how you get promoted.
