My sister Julie Gerow lives and [so far] survives "muddling through" (Lindblom, 1959) life with work-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with the October 2009 WCB-Alberta workplace hostage incident, including the post-incident cascade. The sunglasses are associated with light hypersensitivity she experiences (along with many other unpleasant bio-emotive, physiological manifestations). I'd be grateful if Connections might take a few moments to familiarize yourself with Julie's story, if for no other reason to be a bit more trauma-informed/sensible, and if so motivated consider supporting her real world take on being fab after 40 (using a Facebook account). I'm also open to discussing what it's like to be a primary caregiver who has been on a very steep, evidence-informed trauma-informed practice (TIP) learning curve. #PTSD #trauma #traumainformedpractice #workplaceviolence #evidencebasedpractice

Bioethics, privacy, art 🎯 Now volunteer Patient Partner for chronic pain & a rare disease causing neuro symptoms; CRPS. Using art to help people in pain #ArtDespitePain 🎨
This piece by Laura Casey in The Wall Street Journal resonates for #chronicpain conditions as well... "Grief is well recognized as a process people go through after losing a loved one. But less attention is paid to the grief of people with chronic illnesses and disabilities for the losses they’ve suffered. The grief of those with chronic health issues—for the loss of capabilities, for changed or ruptured relationships, for changes in appearance, for the forced end of a career, or for former dreams for the future—can last for long periods and recur often, as losses and uncertainty become a constant feature of life. “What’s the next thing that [my conditions are] going to take from me?” asks Andrew Gurza, a disability-awareness consultant who has cerebral palsy and chronic illness. “What’s the next thing that I’m not able to do anymore?” People who have intimate knowledge of the grief that comes with chronic health issues say it has a trajectory all its own—a trajectory that many mental-health professionals, friends and family often don’t understand. The idea that everyone goes through five stages of grief—denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance—doesn’t ring true for many disabled people. Chronic illness, other disabilities and the grief they bring often run an unpredictable course, easing but then flaring up again, a cycle that can recur over time. ... People living with chronic illnesses may face pressures from all sides to minimize their experience of loss. Grief related to health conditions may not be understood by family and friends or may even be discouraged as a topic of discussion. Mental-health professionals often lack knowledge of the health conditions clients are seeking help coping with, compounding the problem." #painmedicine #bioethics #mentalhealth #chronicillness https://lnkd.in/edBxRRde

Working after dinner, back-to-back meetings, managing high pressure projects... Sounds familiar? Please read Greg's story. Keep your priorities in mind. Mental health should be one of them. Suicides increased in America, reaching almost 50.000 people in 2022. Few hundreds of them happened at the workplace. Pay attention to your colleagues and loved ones. Call 988 if you need help. #suicidepreventionmonth

*Tough article - please consider your best time and space for reading.* I've been exposed to many situations where people struggled with mental health. You don't forget ones that end in a loss of life, the ones who were saved or the ones left behind. I've advocated for mental health awareness for a long time and on World Mental Health day I encourage everyone to consider one small action you can initiate to support someone struggling. A few colleagues and I recently participated in a 90 minute training called QPR. It stands for Question/Persuade/Refer (link in comments) and has been researched and designed to prevent suicide, much like CPR is designed to prevent loss of life. It reduces the burden from the person struggling, and creates a path for support. Workplace suicide continues to rise. Let's work to protect everyone's mental health. #worldmentalhealthday #empatheticleadership #empathy https://lnkd.in/gas_VRsG
