Interesting LTL Freight carriers' insight in this article from William B. Cassidy with the Journal of Commerce: Less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers expanding their US terminal networks are also purchasing trucks and trailers that will be needed to ensure supply is in place to meet future demand. Equipment purchases haven’t received the same level of attention as real estate deals during an LTL land rush, but LTL carriers are investing in trucks and trailers, replacing older equipment and rebalancing networks as they add terminals and lanes. LTL trucking provider XPO said it added 1,600 tractors to its fleet in the first quarter, bringing its total tractor count above 9,000. [Photo credit: William B. Cassidy / Journal of Commerce]

The transportation industry experiences changes every year. In the last five years, trucking companies and logistics providers have faced significant cost pressures. When spot rates rose sharply in 2021, many truck drivers and single-person trucking companies joined the industry. However, the current state of affairs in trucking is that there are too many trucks available, which has caused rates to remain low in the dry van and open-deck freight markets for the past 18 months. If you want to learn more about what the transportation industry holds for trucking companies, shippers, and logistics stakeholders of all kinds in 2024, you can watch the video above. #opendeck #dryvan #flatbed #heavyhaul #oversizeload #transportationindustry #transportationservices #freightmarket #freightservices #logisticsindustry #reefer #WeareATS https://lnkd.in/gSTN6yJK

Conditions for #truckers continue to be tough, but #shippers aren’t throwing any parties, either. Rising #fuelprices are hurting both truckers and shippers, with FTR | Transportation Intelligence’s Shippers Conditions Index plunging into negative territory for the first time in nearly a year. Meanwhile, #fleets continue to have a healthy appetite for new #equipment in 2024. While this may represent replacement demand, continued strength in Class 8 #truck orders could prolong current #freightmarket conditions that are characterized by excess capacity, according to ACT Research Co. #transportation #truckingindustry #freight #economictrends https://lnkd.in/dvgmYQcq

Another reason to get away from cost based decisions versus performance. This also goes hand in hand with why companies should be more like KDL and do all they can to stop double-brokering and the mistreatment of our carriers.
Freightwaves is reporting that since November active truckload operating authorities dropped by 9K and 92% of authorities are carriers with fewer than 20 trucks. At KDL we've heard of tough times first hand with one carrier telling us that they didn't have money to repair one of their trucks so they were parking it. As times become tougher for these smaller shops, more will eventually bow out and when capacity shrinks, rates will surely rise. #PeopleDriveLogsitics #3pl #3pls #3pllogistics #3plsolutions #transportation #transportationindustry #transportationmanagement #tld #tl #owneroperator #independent #independentcontractors #capacity #trucking #truckingindustry #truckload #benchmarking #logistics #logisticssolutions #logisticsmanagement

Paul Brashier, VP of Drayage & Intermodal at ITS Logistics, recently shared his insights with Ian Putzger of The Loadstar, shedding light on the pressing issues within the trucking industry. Plummeting rates are putting a tight squeeze on profits, while the surge in diesel prices could potentially drive more carriers out of the business. “As trucking raters continue to plummet, many trucking providers are operating at a loss to maintain revenue streams... diesel prices continue to increase, more freight carriers are expected to exit the market.” How will truckers deal with potential challenges during the projected quieter peak season in 2024? https://hubs.li/Q027hrhn0 #industryinsights #marketoutlook #trucking

There’s good news for #shippers this week, thanks to decreasing #fuelprices. Dry van rates on the U.S. spot market also received a much-needed boost while #reefer rates fell. All told, Truckstop reports the worst Market Demand Index on the U.S. spot market since May 2020. Also, expect weak demand for aftermarket parts. #trucking #truck #transportation #freight https://lnkd.in/gRV_5dnn
