There are six key phases to move through when following a design process. But the flow is not only one way - going back a phase is often essential to going forward. It's critical to understand that design requires both getting answers to questions, and doing something about those answers. It is to be expected that doing something means going back and making changes to improve.

In the build vs buy debate, a challenge we often see in engineering teams is an inability to understand or account for the cost of their time. It can seem strange to an engineer that they should pay multiple thousands per month on a tool, a number that is potentially a large fraction of their take home pay. They believe they could build it themselves and run it for a fraction of the cost. But often, they aren't considering the initial cost of their time, in addition to the time it will take to keep the tool they have built running correctly, and the opportunity cost of not working on something much more critical to the success of the business.
