🔔 One core reason that so many young people from NYC disinvested communities don't matriculate directly into #college or #career training programs is because of a lack of support from a caring, committed, and expert postsecondary advisor or counselor. (63%+ of graduating seniors citywide attend college or career training programs as of 2019 DOE data, meaning 37% students don't matriculate to college or career programs) 🔔 Research shows that if there’s a better ratio of counselors to students (currently 1:370 in NYC) then there are better outcomes for students. Schools that have a smaller caseload per counselor have higher attendance rates, better test scores, better graduation rates, and better college outcomes. ⚡ Diane's story reflects how Futures Ignite investment in students and their schools provides pivotal and even transformational support enabling them to explore, identify, reach and achieve their college and career goals--not just in high school but as alumni. And not only during senior year, but throughout their 9th-12th grade high school journey. ⚡Every student deserves an abundance of opportunities, college and career counseling and programs, as well as a caring counselor with a manageable caseload. ⚡Futures Ignite ratio of counselor to students is 1:50 and 91% our students matriculate into college or career training programs, 23% higher than the average for NYC high schools Lifting up and amplifying Diane's story and celebrating educational equity for #givingtuesday2023 Join us by making a donation here: https://lnkd.in/gYE8kmcz
This #GivingTuesday we'd like you to meet Diane, an absolutely amazing WHEELS alumna and founding member of the Clean Air Green Corridor, who we had the pleasure of working with this past summer. As a Posse candidate, Diane found crucial support from the Futures Ignite team, propelling her toward academic and personal success. Even when challenges arose, Futures Ignite made sure she had the resources she needed to thrive and make her dreams a reality. You can be part of Diane’s story by making a contribution today: https://lnkd.in/eyXf3fYp Your support empowers students like Diane while they are making post-secondary decisions, and while they make the transition into this new stage of their lives. Don’t just take our word for it – you can hear Diane’s story in her own words. Watch the video and witness the impact your support can have on students’ lives. Today, Diane is a senior at Brandeis University with plans to continue her education to become a Physician's Assistant, and we couldn't be more excited to continue to watch her journey unfold! 🎉 Video Credit: Phe Studios

#Taytay for President? Here are Tay's very wise sharings from her 2022 New York University commencement speech: ------------------- 1. Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once. Knowing what things to keep and what things to release. You can't carry all things, all grudges, all updates on your ex, all enviable promotions your school bully got at the hedge fund his uncle started. Decide what is yours to hold and let the rest go. Often the good things in life are lighter anyway, so there's more room for them. One toxic relationship can outweigh so many wonderful, simple joys. You get to pick what your life has time and room for. Be #discerning. 2. Learn to #livealongsidecringe. No matter how hard you try to avoid being cringe, you will look back on your life and cringe retrospectively. Cringe is unavoidable over a lifetime. Like wearing something now and finding it revolting and hilarious later. But looking back and laughing is fun. Don't hide your enthusiasm for things. There is a false stigma around eagerness in our culture of our unbothered ambivalence. This outlook perpetuates the idea that it is not cool to want it; people who don't try are fundamentally more chic than people who do. Never be ashamed of trying. Effortlessness is a myth. The people who wanted it the least, were the people Tay wanted to date and be friends with in high school. The people who want it the most are now the people Tay hires to work for her company. It can be really overwhelming figuring out who you want to be and when, who you are now and how to act to get to where you want to go - it's totally up to you! 3. #Mistakes do not equal failure; and do not ultimately lead to the loss of any chance at a happy or rewarding life. Mistakes led to the best things in Tay's life. Being embarrassed when you mess up is part of the human experience. Getting up, dusting yourself off, and seeing who still wants to hang out with you and laugh about it - that's a gift. The times Tay was told no, or wasn't included, wasn't chosen, didn't win, didn't make the cut - looking back, those moments were just as important or more crucial than those where she was said "yes". It made her look inward and make her reflect on who she was. There is pressure in living life through perfectionism. In your life, you will inevitable misspeak, trust the wrong person, underreact, overeact, hurt the people who didn't deserve it, over think, not think at all, self-sabotage, create a reality where only your experience exists, ruin perfectly good moments for yourself and others, deny any wrongdoing, not take the steps to make it right, feel very guilty and let the guilt eat at you, hit rock bottom, finally address the pain you case, try to do better next time, rinse, repeat. Losing things doesn't just mean losing; when we lose things, we gain things too. #taylorswiftSG #fistbumpEdwinTong #lifelonglearning #chplaw #withyou
