Celebrating the uniqueness and strength of every body." I know now all retail formats are changing mannequins as per the brand identities, but this should be in every apparells retail formats. Barney's New York. IYKYK. Every fashion-lover's dream store. Brands such as Comme des Garcons, Christian Louboutin and Azzedine Alaia were introduced to the American luxury market there. They championed independent designers and offered a carefully curated selection that ensured loyal shoppers were not dressed like everyone else. The beauty department was equally well stocked with cult status brands not widely available. Fred's, the in-house restaurant, was the fashion industry equivalent of what Michael's is for media - the go to destination for celebrity sightings, and always crowded. The annual warehouse sale was a fashion industry event in itself, with lines snaking around the block for the opportunity to buy heavily discounted designer goods. People would literally disrobe in the aisles as there were no fitting rooms at the sale. Barney's filed for bankruptcy in 2019, leaving a huge void in the lives of many fashion afficianados. In 2021, Barney's at Saks was launched at Saks Fifth Avenue; a shop in shop highlighting upcoming designers. Unfortunately, it never seemed to really take hold. Last week, on the first day of New York Fashion Week (September 7th), fast fashion brand Forever 21 launched a Barney's New York Collection. I should be happy that the name lives on, but this feels misaligned. Perhaps some things are best off being remembered as they were. #retailing #fashion #ecommerce

In another sign that the culture at Gap is gradually changing under CEO Richard Dickson, Zac Posen has been brought in as Creative Director. Posen has significant talents in design and technical expertise which, if utilized properly, should inject some dynamism and style into a very tired set of brands. It seems, however, that most of Posen's time will be spend on Old Navy. This is Gap's largest brand, so it's important to revitalize it after a run of rather lackluster performance. However, Old Navy isn't the most troublesome brand in the portfolio and it is partly suffering because of a downswing in demand among the hard-pressed family segment, not just because of a poor assortment. The main problem child remains the Gap brand, which is still in search of an identity and purpose. It would be great to see some of Posen's thinking reshape this once iconic label. Looking back at the early days of Merchgirls, the challenges we faced were instrumental in shaping our journey. Coming from the fashion industry, we lacked corporate contacts and a concrete business plan. It was a bit slapdash, but thanks to The Australian Ballet's initial support, Merchgirls took its first steps. Without a catalogue or fixed pricing, we relied on our 'ghost sample collections.' These tangible examples of what we could do showcased our potential to prospective clients. However, entering the merchandise world, particularly for corporate clients presented new frontiers beyond our fashion expertise. Our path to where we are today (almost 10-years later) wasn't without its learning curves.
