Vice President @ Texas Association of Community Colleges| Executive Director @ Texas Success Center | Executive Coach, Leadership Development
Do you know what today is?!? November 8 is National First-Generation College Student Day. First-generation college students are students who come from households where neither parent/guardian has a bachelor's degree or higher. Today, one-half of currently enrolled undergraduate students identify as first-generation (Center for First-generation Student Success, 2023). When I started my college career at a local community college after high school, I had no idea what the term first-gen meant. Once I learned more about the term and when/how people used it, I was embarrassed because I thought people were judging me and my family for not having anyone in our household with a bachelor's degree or higher. I quickly began to understand, however, how rich I was in culture capital. I reaped the benefits of my tenacity and understood that someone's judgement does not define me nor does it reflect my capabilities. Now I am proud to say I am a first generation college graduate with not one but four degrees! I stand on the shoulders of giants who have paved the way for me to achieve more than I could have ever hoped and dreamed for, many who still do not have a college degree! While my children will not be considered first-gen college students, they will know the value of hard-work and recognize the strength of their cultural capital. Today and everyday I celebrate being First Gen!!! #CelebrateFirstGen #IAmFirstGen #FirstGen
