The markets are back open after a rollercoaster year in 2022. The big question on everyones lips is, “What happens next” Last year saw a tsunami of surprises that caught the markets off guard, as investors were blindsided by economists and central banks forecast that wrongly predicted the after effect of Covid on inflation, which hit its highest levels since the 1980s, forcing central banks to ramp up interest rates. The rapid speed in Higher interest rates caused stocks and crypto markets to crash, the U.S Dollar to soar in value, alongside commodity prices hitting the roof because of the war in Ukraine and causing a cost of living crisis. This cocktail of surprises was interesting, fun and scary at the same time, depending on how you approach trading. The most alarming surprise was, the failure of the brightest minds in finance to spot the turmoil as it unfolded. Economists and central banks throughout 2021 said the higher inflation after covid was temporary, until they quickly realised in early 2022 it was not, then the war in Ukraine turned inflation into a fireball that couldn’t be put out until commodity prices came tumbling down due to China’s covid lockdowns and the cost of living crisis causing some demand destruction for commodities. Now markets wonder, what next, Will inflation fall as fast as it went up? Can we even trust central banks to get it right, or are there models out dated to an old economy that was based on low inflation and steady growth?
