Topic: Panel: Social Skills Instruction is a Big Tent: Improving Social Skill Sets for Diverse Learners Social skills as a term encompasses many nuanced topics, including basic listener and speaker skills, engaging in play, interacting with peers and teaching conversational skills. Regardless of a student’s age or stage of development, effective social skills instruction begins with our ability to connect with our students and make sure we are teaching meaningful skill sets both effectively and efficiently. This session provides insights from panelists based on their experiences in clinical, school and home-based settings teaching critical social-communications skills across the life span using evidence-based practices. It was truly a privilege to deliver the AET's Schools Good Autism Practice at one of Telford's secondary schools this afternoon. Sharing the voices and lived experiences of the Autistic Young Experts is undoubtedly one of the most powerful elements of this professional development module. When I deliver this session I like to stop and wonder together about what resonates for the staff team when they read through these beautiful eight 'inclusion promises', devised by the Autistic Young Experts panel. Invariably, staff comment that these are just what anyone would want for all their students. Agree. Of course we would. The difference is that, historically, this has *not* been the lived experience of education for so many autistic learners. It has not been their experience. How sobering is that?
