Meatpacking Tactical Materials Catalog ++ "Can cities and business improvement districts use tactical urbanism to create elegant streets and public spaces on a budget? That was exactly the question we set out to prove in our work with the New York Meatpacking District Management Association. The first project to come out of this exciting collaboration is the Tactical Materials Catalog, a detailed guide that calibrates 120 streetscape materials and products to three distinct Tactical project types: demonstration, pilot, and interim design. Good views and better company on the best coast last night at the LACSI DTLA Chapter’s Annual Patio Dinner. For those of you that make/sell specifiable widgets, I recommend connecting with and engaging with your respective local Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) chapters. Like-minded folks and solid networking (plus sips and snacks)… can’t lose. To their credit, CSI seems to be reinventing themselves in ways that are attracting new talent, blood and eyeballs, a welcome breath of fresh air to some crusty/sleepy impressions I used to have. 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, and six levels! I recently took my 10-year-old son on a trip to the White House, inspired by one of his school projects. When he kept talking about the building, I thought, "Why just talk about it? Let's go see it!" His reaction? "Are you serious, Dad?" You bet I was! Years ago, my father taught me that to truly understand something, you have to experience it firsthand. This adventure was a perfect example of that lesson. We uncovered some fascinating facts about the White House as we explored the historic halls. Here are a few gems we discovered: -The White House has 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, and six levels. It also boasts 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, seven staircases, and three elevators. -Known as the "President's Palace," "President's House," and "Executive Mansion" over the years, it was officially named the White House by Theodore Roosevelt in 1901. -George Washington never lived there, although the city and mansion are named after him. -Teddy Roosevelt built the West Wing, and the Oval Office was added later by President Taft. -The White House was nearly condemned in 1948 due to structural issues but was saved by extensive renovations under President Truman. Visiting the White House was more than just a history lesson; it was an experience that brought history to life for my son. It reminded me that learning is about more than just facts and figures—it's about the stories and experiences that shape our understanding. What is 1 thing you’ve learned this summer?
