Make your portfolio a legible masterpiece! Apply vertical rhythm. Last week, I posted about legibility issues I see often in designers' portfolios. Today, let's discuss another aspect most designers overlook. Vertical rhythm. It is the spacing and arrangement of text and other elements on a page in a way that follows a consistent pattern. The goal is to enhance legibility and achieve a visually pleasing experience. This is often a secret sauce for a minimal page design. Here's how to do it: 1. Create a baseline grid. It is similar to a lined notebook. Horizontal lines with consistent spacing. 2. Choose a baseline height that works well for your body text. It should be the same height as your body text line height. I often use multiples of 8px as it works well with 16px font size and 24px line height. 3. Align everything to the grid so that text objects or images are placed between baselines.
