Every July we observe BIPOC Mental Health Month. It's important to shed light on the unique mental health challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. This observance helps raise awareness about the systemic barriers and disparities in mental healthcare while promoting inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. We must strive for more equitable and accessible mental health support for everyone. It's more than important, it is at critical mass. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that only about one-third of adults with a mental illness receive treatment, even lower for people of color. BIPOC communities often face significant barriers to accessing mental health services, including lack of transportation, insurance, language barriers, and cultural stigma. These barriers are rooted in systemic racism and discrimination and have resulted in significant disparities in mental health outcomes. Would love to know your thoughts on how we can turn this around. #healthcare #mentalhealth #disparities #behavioralhealthcare #systemicracism #community #bipocmentalhealth #barrierstotreatment

June is National Men’s Health Month, and LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. Men are less likely than women to seek help for stressful life events, such as substance abuse, and depression. This is due to social norms about masculinity, downplaying symptoms, and disconnection and isolation. "Depression is prevalent among gay men, wherein gay men are three times more likely to experience depression compared with the general adult population (Cox, 2006; King et al., 2008). There are many mental health resources that are available for men, including support groups, websites with helpful tools, and therapists who focus on men’s concerns.
