David is absolutely correct here. Multitasking is the best way to be totally mediocre at your job, while feeling like you're killing it...
I recently learned about a technique to down regulate your sympathetic nervous system (which is responsible for activating the body's fight-or-flight response in times of arousal or perceived threat), allowing for the time and space to "come down" from a highly engaging or energetic activity.
The energy isn't always physical, either. It can just be an onslaught of dopamine hits keeping your mind stimulated yet unfocused. For example, leading an engaging meeting, or answering a ton of messages in Slack as you bounce around from unread channel to unread channel responding to folks waiting on your reply.
The technique is called box breathing, and while it may sound simple (breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, and hold for 4 seconds), the results are honestly quite transformative. Give it a try!
Next time you need to focus on creating some content, or are doing some strategic planning, or maybe reading through a tutorial or guide that requires focus and a flow state, pause before jumping in and calm your body and mind with some breath work. Then do one thing at a time to completion, while keeping distractions to a minimum.
"You can't do two things at once. You can try, which basically just means you're jumping from one thing to the other and back again. And every time you do that jump, you lose a little bit." - David Heinemeier Hansson
In this clip from the latest episode of The REWORK Podcast, David explains why adding new things to projects in progress leads to lost attention, lost context, and lost progress and momentum.
