I want to share a very important matter with everyone so they are aware of the BEECHTREE | PEPPERLAND by HKB RETAIL (SMC) PVT. LTD organization. I was their permanent employee, and on July 7, 2023, I was laid off without any proper evaluation or authentic reason by the brand. There are a lot of people who have been laid off on one-day notice, and we've been told that the company doesn't have the capacity to keep us. We were forcefully asked to sign resignation letters. The company's hierarchy was changed in December 2022. The person who was leading everything left, and her replacement proposed to expand the business so that the brand could be taken to the international market. After that, an anonymous number of new positions were opened without any proper planning, and they kept on hiring for different positions. I joined Beechtree in March 2023, and I was their first hire as a Footwear & Accessories designer; before that, there was not any separate department for it. A bunch of stories were told to me, and I was kept in the shadows all these months because I didn't know that there was office politics going on at the back. On July 5, 2023, the previous COO came back, and after that, she started laying off everyone who came after her or who were not her supporters. She didn't evaluate anyone, she didn't talk to anyone, she didn't see anyone's work, and without thinking about anyone's future, she just gave the order to lay off everyone in a blink of an eye. She only took sides with her team, and because of her spontaneous decisions, we are all suffering. When you give your 100% to a company and when you only value building the brand without being part of any gossip or office politics, that's how they treat you. This office politics has destroyed so many people's careers and mental health. They are still shamelessly posting for new job positions; it's a scam. We are getting numb! Just the thought of our community getting used to hearing these 2-digit, 3-digit layoff numbers scares the shit out of me. No one get the chills, unless its their name on the list and this needs to be changed. Getting fired shouldn't be normalized! Getting fired when you did everything right shouldn't be normalized at all! When Layoffs happen at these 'AAA studios', they don't look at CVs and portfolios. The most talented professionals get impacted too. This post is to help every soul that got impacted during this blood-shed! I don't typically post a lot on LinkedIn as I find it to be a messy medium of drama and opinions. This morning I felt compelled to post as I start a new job and we approach Christmas. A lot of people have been impacted by layoffs this year (including myself). It is a very trying time to go through a layoff in today's market. The interview process has become extremely long. The candidate experience has wavered at most places in favor of drawn-out and at times completely disrespectful interview processes (almost a full quarter of interviewing at many places with few providing any form of real feedback). Considering what a lot of people are going through right now and how tough it can be to be in a job-seeking position during the holidays, please reach out to your friends, family, former colleagues etc and see how they are doing. Even if you can't offer someone a position, a small reaffirmation of their skillset -- the things you accomplished working together or even just lending an ear to listen can be extremely helpful. The holidays can already be a tough time for a lot of people. This year has doubled down on that. So double down on your inner circles! Best of luck to those still seeking and to those hiring -- please treat people respectfully, it could be you on the opposite side of that interview someday.

Happy Wednesday! I've been noticing many people down my timeline have experienced layoff(s) from a company. Here are some tips on how to address a layoff during an interview. Be honest, employers are typically understanding about layoffs. Keep the explanation brief. Ex: I was unfortunately let go during a company-wide layoff. You may have noticed the industry has been taking some hits for more sustainable business models. While I was disappointed, I recognized that it was a decision that reflected the changing business climate. Highlight your work and specific metrics you achieved...and move on! We don't talk about the Ex for long! LOL Maybe next drop in why you're excited for a fresh start and a new chapter. All in all, have fun and bring your personality to the interview. This isn't just a time to be in the hot seat, it's also a time for you to shine with the hiring team so they can determine if you fit the company's culture AKA vibe. A few nights back, I had a conversation with one of my ex-team members recently laid off. A talented writer with almost a decade of experience, he was finding it hard to digest the sudden turn of events. However, what troubled him even more was the way he had been treated by the human resource teams of so-called reputable organizations during his job search. One particular incident stood out. After successfully completing two rounds of on-call interviews with an well-known IT company, he was asked to complete a written assignment with a 24-hour deadline. To his dismay, the deadline was unexpectedly reduced to just 6 hours. Despite the pressure, he managed to meet the deadline, only to be left hanging afterward. Despite being initially told that the feedback was positive and that he would hear back soon, it had been close to two weeks with no communication from the HR team. His attempts to contact them were met with silence, as the HR representative neither responded nor returned his calls. Sadly, this wasn't an isolated incident for my ex-team member. He shared that he had experienced similar situations with more than one organization during his job search journey. In this situation, one can't help but wonder: Wouldn't it be more humane and respectful to inform the job seeker about the decision instead of leaving them in limbo? Just imagine if the roles were reversed, and it was the employee who stopped responding to the HR's calls after giving a verbal acceptance. The HR community would likely raise concerns about professionalism and ethics. I'm completely taken aback by this whole incident. I would like to know how you all feel about it? Is it justified? The least a company can do is acknowledge or respond to the person applying to work for them. While I'm happy to see promotions and job acceptances filling up my feed these days, I know there are also a ridiculous amount of people out there still pulling the pieces together from the flood of layoffs that knocked a lot of us sideways this year... If you are one of those folks still on the hunt for your next role please know that your turn to make that announcement of a new chapter is just around the corner. Don't loose hope and please don't let the announcements of others landing a role feel like a personal defeat for yourself. Important things to keep in mind right now: -You are valuable, your layoff reflects more on the business that had to let you go than you. -Do not become desperate, this is how you end up in roles you don't belong in -Know your monetary value. Use LinkedIn, Glassdoor or Fishbowl to learn what others in your role are making. There are going to be some shady hiring teams trying to low ball you thinking you're desperate. -Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. THIS IS THE TIME TO USE YOUR NETWORK! Tips while applying: -Make sure your contact information is accurate (yes it must be said) - Get those numbers on your resume. BRAG. Hiring managers want to know what impact you've had in your past roles, they don't want the copy and paste of the job description. -Always submit your resume as a PDF to avoid issues with formatting -Include the months in your dates! Jan 2020 to Nov. 2023 is a lot different than Jan 2020- Jan 2023 If there is a gap just write a short blurb explaining that time period. The last few years have been a doozey for everyone (esp. in Tech) You don't need to hide it. - Go on to the company LinkedIn page, find the person who you believe is the Recruiter or Hiring manager and drop them a message reiterating your interest in the role. Be sure to include " if you're not the right person to contact I'd really appreciate being directed to the right person" And very important: Get outside! Move your body! Don't feel like you have to lock yourself up until you land a job. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, allow yourself to enjoy that cup of coffee that makes you feel human and gives you even the smallest amount of human interaction outside of home. You got this.
