Leading a team as part of the emergency response to Covid, the 'impossible' ways of working were achieved - data was shared, organisations worked across boundaries, communities from all sections of society were reached with the help of VSCE partners and community champions and together services delivered a rapid response, literally overnight. But where are we now? Back to working in silos, not taking forward the lessons learned from what was achieved during the pandemic and health inequalities are increasing. Below is an insightful article which highlights the need for sustainable investment in prevention and what needs to change as System to help keep people well and ultimately save lives. https://lnkd.in/ezrdx8XH

Well this is a fascinating listen, thirteen years on, about what Chris Chant thought was unacceptable in government IT and why G-Cloud was going to change all that. What has actually changed? - the five suppliers that dominated government IT back then have largely been replaced with two hyperscale cloud providers who dominate that market and are subject of a CMA competition investigation - we still have no idea how many people work in IT in the public sector, or what they do - we don't actually know how much the government spends on IT as a whole, or how much of it is being spent on legacy sustainment vs. cloud - we do know that just three government departments renewed contracts valued at nearly £1bn, with one cloud supplier, on 30 November 2023 - we also know that the #1 supplier by spend on G-Cloud is AWS, by quite some margin. That includes the Home Office £450m contract over three years. But it doesn't include indirect AWS spend through partners and SIs - SMEs are still excluded from bidding for me any government contracts, particularly central gov There should be a serious look into the promises and commitments made at the start of the Cloud First policy and the digital marketplace because I don't think the business case has stacked up.
This is the talk given by Chris Chant in October 2011 about UK Government IT. You can find the full original version here, https://lnkd.in/dPjsYpx3 gov. uk source: https://lnkd.in/d8v9D3Dx

The more open dialogue the better, especially on tough subjects. I hope the hui at Tūrangawaewae signals the start of a year in which many more national conversations take place. Not just on divisive social media platforms and in badly-written headlines but real talk, ideally face to face, where people try to understand each other and find shared paths of action. NZ has a lot of issues lurking under the floorboards from infrastructure to education to health to the basic ability of government to provide services to citizens. In an age of institutional failure, it’s time to spark some real conversations and change.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Security, Democracies & Cities conference in Brussels starts. The conference will take place from wednesday until friday and is hosted by European Forum for Urban Security (Efus). Nordic Safe Cities will attend and contribute at three sessions: - On Thursday the 21st of March from 4.30-6.00 pm (studio), our Deputy Director Lotte Fast Carlsen will speak at the thematic session - Protecting freedom of expression and diversity in shared public spaces. The session will discuss the safe use of public spaces in the context of international tensions and crises: How can we ensure that the city remains a safe place for democratic expression during protest demonstrations? How can we intervene in digital public spaces in terms of monitoring and preventing urban tensions? - On Friday morning from 9-10 am (R3), Head of Digital Prevention Sebastian Jørgensen, and Deputy Director Lotte Fast Carlsen, will head the how to session - How to understand and prevent hate, extremism, and disinformation online. At the session they present our Safe Digital City initiative and the challenges of hate, extremism, and disinformation that takes place on digital platforms. Addressing these challenges requires a systematic understanding of why, where, and how the local hate is formed and spread online. The aim of the session is to foster a discussion on existing digital prevention structures, inspire the participants with new tools, methods, and promising practices from three selected safe digital cities and ultimately, to help cities develop unique concepts and inspirations for safeguarding their digital democracies. - And lastly, on Friday from 11 am - 12.30 pm., Nordic Pioneer Prize winner 2022 Luqman Wadood will speak at the plenary session - Renewing our democratic practices, linking security, democracy and cities. The session discusses the gap between citizens and institutions widens, fostering the rise of authoritarian movements that challenge the very validity of democratic systems, as well as mistrust - even distrust fuelled by disinformation campaigns. We look very much forward to attend the conference and experience how European cities can learn from our Nordic member cities and vice versa. Democracies in Europe are under numerous threats which demand further cross-European cooporation on all levels.
