If you want to win me over, ask me to present at a conference. This past week I received two invitations for the fall, and I am thrilled.
It is truly one of the aspects of my job that I love the most.
Substantive talks, litigation demonstrations or the business of law— I like all of them.
Every single time I get a ton out of it.
My goal is six invitations a year. I have attained that goal in the past, although it’s usually more like four or five.
Because I am a frequent flyer, I often get asked how conference speakers are selected by lawyers interested in these opportunities. I highly recommend you consider asking conference organizers to put you on their proposed speakers lists.
Most organizations that run conferences have lists of possible speakers and topic suggestions from their membership. When the conference chairs are chosen they then get access to the list to consider which speakers to invite. Getting your name on the list is something you can do for yourself. If you come up with some interesting and relevant topics, you increase your chance of being selected.
Once you get one opportunity and do a great job, the invitations flow.
If this is your goal for 2024, the time to start actioning it is now. Believe it or not planning for spring conferences is already in the works.
