Ah yes, I remember when I got picked for my very first internship in systems engineering without having a clue in the world what it was. 😅 How did you find yourself in Systems Engineering? It is interesting to note that although there have been a growing number of systems engineering degree programs and a wider reach towards awareness of the discipline... 1. It is still not a widely understood role for the general public. 🌐 2. It is still not a commonly pursued line of study amongst younger folk. 👨🎓 3. It is still dominated by the very first generations to encounter it. 📊 I wonder when we will stop being chosen by Systems Engineering... This year’s National Apprenticeship Week in the UK runs from 5 to 11 February. The initiative targets all industries and sectors, but for the electronics industry, there is a particular need for programmes that equip apprentices with STEM skills. Colorado has a lack of systems engineers, and the Cleantech and aerospace industries are suffering because of it. This is a classic domino effect: systems engineers are a multidisciplinary type of talent particularly important to the aerospace industry, which the climate tech industry heavily relies on for satellites and remote sensing instruments that aid in monitoring and studying climate change. Without sufficient systems engineers to fill roles within aerospace, all of this research and potential innovation will grind to a halt. The good news is that our CO-WY Climate Resilience Engine is working to do something about it. One of our top initiatives is to develop work-based programs that support the hands-on training of systems engineering talent, resulting in a more robust, well-trained workforce. To do that, we’re hard at work identifying where we need to “catch” talent in their professional journey to support them in entering this field. With that information, we can better serve (and grow) the talent pool through targeted training, apprenticeships, and internships.

During my enriching Internships over the years, I had the incredible opportunity to delve into the fascinating realm of electrical engineering, uncovering the intricacies of power transmission and generation. From the moment I stepped into the world of power distribution, I was captivated by the sheer magnitude and complexity of the systems at play. Behind every flick of a switch and every glowing light bulb, there exists an intricate network of power lines, transformers, and substations working harmoniously to deliver electricity to homes, businesses, and industries across the region. Witnessing firsthand how this colossal machinery seamlessly transports energy across vast distances, I gained a profound appreciation for the significance of efficient power transmission.
