Is it becoming more about the how and the why than the what these days? 💡 Soft skills — often dubbed as "people skills" — are sometimes described as intangible qualities that shape how we interact with others and navigate the world around us. Despite their critical importance in personal and professional success, they're often referred to as "soft," which I think leads to some questions about this terminology. The term "soft skills" can be misleading, as it implies a certain level of flexibility or that they can easily be reskilled. However, the truth is quite the opposite — most soft skills like empathy and analytical thinking are deeply ingrained, shaped by our experiences, and personality traits, and they are, whether we like it or not, with us to stay. Their stability over time is a reason why they are so powerful to assess in a recruitment process. So why the "soft" label? The primary reason for the term is to differentiate this type of skills from "hard skills", which are specific, teachable abilities or knowledge sets, such as programming or operating machinery. Basically, "hard skills" would be what you are able to do at work, and the "soft skills" would be how or why you get there, such as through creative thinking, collaborating, leadership or fueled by your drive and motivation. Likely, not so long ago, these "hard skills" were valued higher in the workplace than the more general "soft skills", but I am wondering if recent advancements, both societal and technological, could be shifting the emphasis in our job performance further from the "hard" to the "soft" side of things. I think we are also seeing this change in how modern organizations are moving away from a hiring process centered around a candidate's CV towards focusing on personal characteristics. Where would you place your bets on what makes a good performer going forward? 🙂 #SoftSkills #Jobperformance #HireForPotential #FutureOfWork
