How do you handle a chaotic workplace early on in your product marketing career? Let's go through some of my top tips from years of experience... 1️⃣ Handle your work and time first. This is a challenge for most junior product marketers. As someone with a reasonably high work capacity, I often overestimate what I can deliver and don’t factor in enough time for contingency. I also love ticking off my to-do list. Yet this can be a way to self-validate and to feel “productive”, rather than work on what’s important. Moreover, chaos can make it seem like everything is essential, which simply isn’t the case. ✨ Recommendations ✨ Try the Eisenhower matrix to better understand what work is both important and urgent, versus what is more of a distraction. I’m also an advocate of the “eat the frog” method, which simply means you choose your most important task for your day and do it first. 😟 Let's talk toxic work environments - share your stories in the comments! ⬇ As a product marketing specialist in the IT industry, I'm all about building excitement and a positive brand image. But let's be honest, sometimes the internal experience doesn't quite match the external messaging. 😵 💥 My last company was a case in point. 💣 Don't get me wrong 💣 , the product itself was fantastic 📈 . Cutting-edge technology, tons of potential – a marketer's dream! But the environment...well, let's just say my manager thrived on chaos. Deadlines constantly shifted, feedback was inconsistent, and any attempt at clear communication felt like navigating a minefield. 😶 Frustration became my constant companion. 👩💻 The creative spark I usually brought to my work fizzled out, replaced by a dull ache of resentment. It reached a boiling point when a brilliant campaign I poured my heart into was scrapped last minute, with no explanation. 😞 That was my turning point. I realized I deserved better. ⛳ Deserved a space where my ideas were valued, and collaboration wasn't a four-letter word. So, I took a leap of faith and started searching for a new opportunity. 🆕 The interview process at my current company felt like a breath of fresh air. Transparency, open communication, and a genuine appreciation for creativity – it was everything I'd been missing. 🤞 Today, I can confidently say I'm thriving. My manager is a supportive mentor, the team dynamic is fantastic, and the energy is electric. ❤️ 📌 The biggest lesson I learned? 📌 It's okay to walk away from a situation that's not serving you. Your happiness and professional growth matter. 🤔 Do you have any similar experiences? People First Marketing & Experience (Prospects, Customers, & Employees) for Momentum ECM & Elevated MSP
One of the most important people-first lessons I ever learned and embraced was the necessity of building and maintaining one-to-one conversations and relationships with fellow employees and team members. Not just direct reports, or my fellow marketing and sales team members. Everyone in the company. Because everyone in a company matters, regardless of title, position, skillset, or daily tasks and responsibilities. As the marketing director for a busy SaaS reseller and with more than fifteen years of experience as a digital marketer, I've embraced the knowledge that inspiration and themes worthy of sharing with customers often come from interactions with engineers, tech support, and operations—not just the sales team! These conversations and relationships have to look outside of the workplace. Do we share any hobbies? A passion for music? Book lovers? Fellow mountain bikers or tennis players? Forging bonds can start with work topics, but reinforcing those bonds requires more: affinity, shared perceptions, shared interests, and trust. Leading a team or a company is one thing. Truly knowing the people you work with is a different ball of wax. Owners, leaders, team members, and everyone up and down the line all play crucial roles in creating a people-first workplace. How often do you connect and interact with team members outside of your daily efforts? #PeopleFirst #WorkplaceCulture

What's in a name? Ever wonder how much people are really paying attention to the title you hold? I have been researching some of the most creative job titles I have found on LinkedIn, Indeed, and various other sites and made a list of my Top 10. What's the wackiest, craziest job title you have come across? Does it give you confidence in their abilities? Is there really more to a title than just words? 10. Chief Troublemaker - AKA CEO, I don't know if this is what I seek in the King of my work castle. 9. Wizard of Lightbulb moments - Marketing Director. Personally, I love this! We need someone in our corner that brings the ideas and momentum. 8. Chief Inspiration Officer - I am really not sure but where do I apply? 7. Happiness Advocate - Customer Service Rep. This really should be a universal shift. Who doesn't want someone to advocate for happiness? 6. Galactic Viceroy of Research Excellence - Sadly this title was way more fun than the work. It was someone who does Cloud research for Microsoft. 5. Innovation Sherpa - A consultant who helps bring innovation in to struggling businesses. 4. Swiss Army Knife - Every Office Manager reading this can relate. No explanation needed. 3. Paranoid in Chief - AKA Chief Technology Officer 2. Dr. No - Chief Finance Officer. The official party pooper of the office. And my favorite.... 1. Vibe Manager & Head of all things Awesome - Head of HR. #jobtitle #hilarious #workfun

Why New Year’s resolution don’t work (and why I will still invite you for my event related to it) The topic of New Year’s resolutions often stirs strong opinions. Some people love it, and write down their goals about it every single year. Others dismiss it as futile, find it useless and a waste of time. Where do you stand? I was digging into the subject online, and it's evident that the traditional "writing down an extensive list of New Year's goals" approach is largely ineffective due to various factors, including: - Unrealistic goals - Inconsistent dedication - Rushing to achieve goals - Not having fun in the process - Failure to celebrate milestones - Lack of goal measurement or monitoring Can I be fully transparent with you? I like to take the time every year to reflect on the closing year and set intentions for the upcoming one. This practice has significantly impacted my career, personal life, health, finances, relationships, and more. However, my method goes beyond the cliché of merely writing down goals on paper, stashing them away, and forgetting them by February. Now, onto you: On Sunday, the 14th of January, I’ll be hosting the live event “Your roadmap for 2024”. This isn't about the typical "recording your goals" bullshit - it's about purpose, productivity, and crafting a fulfilling career. Seating is limited, so secure your spot ASAP. I started having 1:1 with my managers very early in my career and it helped me in delivering my goals, stay on track and helped build a better relationship with my manager. Later on when I became a manager, I started having 1:1 with my team too and found it an effective way to keep track of my team’s deliverables especially in a virtual setting. I still do it today although the structure may have changed. It gives me the opportunity to coach, give feedback and also receive feedback. Do you do 1:1? What has been your experience?
Nothing helps your career more than this: → We work for our managers, not a logo above the door → If we want to progress, we do it only with the support of our manager And there's no better place or time to progress your career than in your 1:1 meetings Yet the move to the remote/hybrid era has made it even more challenging: → The average professional has more than 5x 1:1's p/w → This is an increase from before the pandemic → Where the average was just 0.9 per week → That's a 500% increase since the pandemic As a result, we've seen a 12% decline in managers having 1:1 compared to 2019: → In 2019, 94% of managers were having 1:1's → In 2022, only 83% of managers are having 1:1's However, the benefit is beyond question: Adobe's research cites: → 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝟭:𝟭 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟯𝟯% ↳ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝟭:𝟭 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 ↳ 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼𝗼! So remember, you get out what you (both) put in. A 1:1 is about priorities and progress where both sides win! What 1:1 advice would you give your younger self? When productivity dips during peak periods in a product marketing career, it's essential to reassess your workload and priorities. Here are a few steps you can take: 1. Prioritize Tasks : Identify high-priority tasks that directly impact your goals and focus on them first. 2. Time Management : Allocate specific blocks of time for different tasks to maintain focus and avoid burnout. 3. Delegate : If possible, delegate some tasks to team members to lighten your load and ensure everything gets done efficiently. 4. Take Breaks : Regular short breaks can help you recharge and maintain concentration throughout the day. 5. Seek Support : Communicate with your team about your workload and discuss ways to streamline processes or get additional support if needed. 6. Skill Development : Invest time in learning new tools or skills that can help streamline your tasks and increase efficiency in the future. Remember, it's crucial to maintain a balance to prevent burnout and maintain long-term productivity.

Over my almost 20-year career, I've learned one major thing about managing a team Once you leap to managing, you're the proud owner of responsibilities, a never-ending to-do list, and of course, a colorful collection of sticky notes! 😉 Managing a team can be as challenging as trying to fix a printer on a Monday morning. So, I shared a few tips with Association for Talent Development (ATD) on how new managers can keep their reports engaged and motivated. Check it out: 1️⃣ Be as clear as crystal. Transparency is the name of the game! 📝 Set those expectations straight and let your team know what's up. If you don't have an answer to a burning question, say it! Honesty is the best policy, and they'll appreciate your authenticity. 2️⃣ Regular check-ins aren't just for office small talk. Take a genuine interest in your team's career aspirations and how they're doing in general. Remember, a little TLC can go a long way in building strong relationships! 3️⃣ Avoid micromanaging like the plague! 🚫 Trust your team to rock their tasks and delegate responsibilities like a pro. Hovering over shoulders is so last season! Empower them to shine and watch their confidence soar. 4️⃣ Creativity is where the magic happens. Encourage your team to find their wild and crazy ideas. Who knows? That suggestion for a time machine might lead to your next groundbreaking project! 🚀 5️⃣ Keep on learning. Think outside the box and find unique ways to upskill your team. I love how WorkRamp has a library filled with pre-built content so we can continuously learn new skills. 6️⃣ Celebrate those unusual or hilarious moments. "Best Use of a Stapler" or "Most Creative Excuse for Being Late," anyone? The team will love the random awards, and it creates camaraderie. 🏆 So whether you're a rookie manager or a veteran looking for a refresh, try one or all of these ideas to get your team engaged. It will help build a strong working team that will take you to the next level. Many managers might hate me for this, but I'll say it anyway: It's rarely the job that makes people quit. 📌 Here's what they're actually leaving: 1. No leadership. 2. Feeling micromanaged. 3. Toxic workplace culture. 4. Lack of trust from managers. 5. Lack of growth opportunities. 6. Feeling overqualified for the role. 7. Poor communication within the team. 8. Overwork and unrealistic expectations. 9. Feeling undervalued and unappreciated. 10. Lack of space for creativity or innovation. Most people ignore these signs until they decide to leave. But the more we talk about it, the better work conditions we'll achieve. Credit Victoria Repa 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! 𝟭. 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 🔗https://lnkd.in/dRspHNmd 𝟮. Tech Success Manager | Driving Innovation, Streamlining Processes, & Implementing Improvements | Events Speaker
If you're looking to grow a product, focus on how your product can save people money, save time, or reduce their administrative workload. Emphasize how your product can improve conversion rates, increase revenue, or enhance customer retention. To foster an environment of experimentation, improvement, and learning, focus on creating a culture of trust and safety. Encourage team members to own up to their mistakes and share them with others, rather than publicly blaming or embarrassing them. If your friend is starting a business, consider buying their product and offering your support. Don't ask for a discount, as this can hurt their credibility and undermine their chances of success. Self-doubt and perfectionism can hinder personal growth. To overcome these obstacles, push outside your comfort zone, even if you're unqualified or scared. Embrace discomfort and be willing to take risks, and the results may surprise you. A good manager can positively impact your life, career, and development. They create a positive working environment where everyone feels safe speaking out and contributing. If you're in a management position, strive to be the kind of manager you wished you had. Toxic workplaces often have policies that exclude or disadvantage certain groups of people. Examples include no work from home policy, no policies in place for invisible disabilities, no enhanced parental or family policies, no punishment for toxic behaviors, not disclosing salaries on job ads #culture #workplace #management #growth #business #product
