Fed Governor Waller agrees the central bank can ‘proceed carefully’ on interest rates - Fed Governor Christopher Waller told CNBC on Tuesday that “a hell of a good week of data” will buy the central bank some time on policy decisions. - While he was encouraged by the recent reports on where prices are trending, he said they also indicate that the Fed can afford to hold rates higher until it is sure inflation is on the run. “The biggest thing is just inflation,” Waller said. “We got two good reports in a row.” The key now is to “see whether this low inflation is a trend or if it was just an outlier or a fluke.” Waller is generally considered one of the more hawkish members of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee, meaning he has favored tighter monetary policy and higher interest rates as the central bank battles inflation that in the summer of 2022 was running at its highest rate in more than 40 years. #federalreserve #fomc #FedSpeak #monetarypolicy #moneymarkets #moneymarket #interestrates #economy #economy2023 #cashisking #cashmanagement

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter-point, marking the highest rate in 16 years, due to elevated inflation. The policy statement suggests the possibility of further increases as the Fed monitors economic data to reach its 2% inflation target. Fed Chair Jerome Powell may shed light on future decisions in a press conference. The Federal Reserve, in its 11th rate hike out of the last 12 meetings, raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point on Wednesday. This decision resulted in the highest U.S. central bank policy rate in 16 years. Very interesting article indirectly shedding further understanding of the Fed's data driven and data dependant narrative and the dilemna the Fed is facing in navigating a rough and tough last mile in the battle against inflation. The author suggests that "since monetary policy works with a lag, Central banks would therefore be wise to start easing quickly but not move too fast unless economies appear to be heading for a deep recession. They need to find a gentle path towards relatively neutral interest rates to neither stimulate nor restrict economic growth and inflation. This level is unknown but is not necessarily much lower than the official rates that prevail today and certainly not near zero".
