The future is now: modern(ising) pentathlon. The classic setting of Alexandria, Egypt is where we found the future of modern pentathlon. UIPM - World Pentathlon Modern Pentathlon Junior Championships landed there on yesterday, 24th June. These young competitors arrive at the sport at a time of transition. The modern pentathlon governing body, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne has decided to make some major changes to the sport. At this summer's #Olympics the semi-finals and final will be condensed into a 90 minute programme with shooting, fencing, swimming, horse jumping and cross country running only separated by short breaks. At present competitions can run over many hours, or even days in different locations. This new format will take place in a single setting. As if this were not enough - after #Paris2024 an obstacle course will replace horse riding. These changes were announced in a direct attempt to maintain the sport's prominence at the Olympics. As some feel it is pandering to the powers of TV, there are many unhappy pentathletes. The UK's Joe Choong MBE has stated that he will walk away from the sport once the changes arrive. The youngsters at Alexandria will be the first generation to see the even more modern pentathlon as the new normal. It is always great to see great swimmers and great champions. But don't trust your eyes when you see their current speed numbers, despite the fact that these numbers show us the speed to a hundredth of a second. Something like 1.71 - 1.73 - 1.72 - 1.68 meters per second. This is not true and misleading. During each stroke the speed changes by 0.3 - 0.5 meters per second. DURING EACH STROKE. BY 0.3 - 0.5 METERS PER SECOND.
