It was staggering to see that a recent CVS Health study found that 74% of younger adults (aged 18-34) reported experiencing concerns about either their own mental health or the mental health of family and friends, a 12%-point increase since April 2020. Research shows that fewer than half of seniors with mental and/or substance use disorders receive treatment. Many patients with mental health issues and/or SUDs are first identified in primary care settings, hospitals, or emergency rooms. But current referral methods fall short, often leaving patients to navigate complex processes and cold-call therapists without adequate information. Studies show that over 50% of referrals never result in a scheduled appointment, largely due to these navigational difficulties (Smith et al., 2019). Furthermore, a survey by Mental Health America found that 76% of patients found it difficult to find the right mental health professional (MHA, 2020). We need a change. #MentalHealth #ReferralSystems
