This competition brought together colleagues from different departments who bond together over their love for the sport.
“This is the thirteenth year of the Dow Jones Dragon Boat Team, also the first race after COVID. The team trained very hard in the last three months," said Simon Wan, captain of the team. 𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁, 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲, Mark Cavendish's recent triumph is nothing short of extraordinary.
I woke up this morning to the stunning news that Cavendish had won the sprint stage in the Tour de France. For cycling enthusiasts, this is thrilling, and for those unfamiliar, it's a story worth knowing. Cavendish exemplifies how to thrive through adversity. As I tried to explain to my wife, there were tears in my eyes. I am sure she was thinking, "What on earth, it's only cycling." But the effect on me of this win is mind blowing.
At 39, after crashing out of the 2023 Tour de France during the 8th stage and equaling the record for the most stage wins, he faced an uncertain future. Retiring in 2023, he defied expectations by planning a comeback for the 2024 Tour. Many doubted his chances due to his age and the quality of the competition, but today, he proved them wrong.
His victory is a testament to hard work, tenacity, and the power of a dedicated team. It's a reminder that with the right support, relentless effort, and unwavering perseverance, we can achieve remarkable things.
In business, we often talk about grit and staying power. Cavendish's journey is a powerful reminder of why we push forward, why we persevere, and how teamwork can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
I cut a 1-minute clip on Sky News' YouTube channel that highlights their race strategy, the team's effort, and their ability to adapt when plans went astray. It's really showcases their preparation, adaptability and resilience.
Also, what was funny was earlier in the race, one of the commentators was joking about Mark at the side of the road. He was adjusting the handlebars by a 1mm. He said thats Mark in the zone, when he is doing this, he is at his best. Picky, all about details, looking for perfection. This then gives him the confidence. Little did he know how right he was.
Mark's journey, through depression, failure, and successes, for me is incredibly inspiring. He just keeps pushing on, and that determination is something I deeply admire.

In this interesting article by World of Show Jumping on USA Show Jumping Athlete Cathleen Driscoll, she shared her perspective on team ownership and athlete backing in the US:
"I find the owners in the US prefer to back men. I don't know why but I think it's much easier for male riders to get owners and if you have a great team owner behind you and you can have a strong string of horses, you can move up on the ranking list, get into bigger shows, and get better opportunities. I think we are lacking good owners especially for female riders. I think it's harder for us to get owners and it really shouldn't be. I think we are missing out on a lot of talent that just needs opportunity."
Despite show jumping sport having exceptional growth similar to the growth now seen in Formula One in regard to investment in elite level competitions, tours, venues, major sponsorship, broadcasting, endorsements, and media deals, Driscoll's statements still ring true. There is a definite lack of diversity among the athletes at the highest level of show jumping sport and a lack of investment into women riders and riders of color resulting in much talent going undiscovered. Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity to help change this continued trajectory.

One of the best things about horse races is that they happen all year long. Even when the traditional horse racing season is finished in the UK, you can still follow races in other regions like North America, Asia, and Australia. If you wager with a big-name bookie like Paddy Power, Unibet, or Betfred, you have access to a near endless stream of horse race events. Horse races provide a variety of betting opportunities, including each-way bets. By the way, if you are looking for information on the UK betting company sites we just mentioned, MightyTips has it. ⚽️📈
So, what does each-way mean in betting? Well, an each-way bet is actually two separate bets rolled into one. You wager on one outcome while, at the same time, wagering on another. While this may sound a bit confusing, it really isn't. Keep reading to find out our simple but detailed answer to the question at hand, which is: What does each-way mean in betting? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Love this! It’s the same with change or transformation as well as sales performance … you can’t just focus on the end goal (KPI, bonus, a shiny new platform). Focusing on the process and the steps to get to the end will deliver the best results. A strong well thought through process often delivers results beyond your initial expectations!

Just a quick statistics tutorial. At the horse races they have something called the “Pick 6” where you buy a ticket trying to pick the winning horse in 6 consecutive races. You may have heard that the odds of winning are “one in a million”. That’s literally true and knowing that helps me to keep straight the following. For any “event” that has a definite number of possible outcomes, to calculate the total number of possibilities for a series of those events you just have the number of possible outcomes per event “raised to the power” of the number of events to occur.
So since you have 10 horses you have 10 possible outcomes. For 6 races you have 6 ‘events’. So the total number of possibilities is 10 to the 6th power(10^6), which is a million, meaning there are a million possible distinct tickets you could buy for the “pick 6”.
The fall months mean more races are starting to appear on the calendar, whether it’s a target marathon, HS cross country season or the local 5k.
In addition to serving as the reward for all your preparation, racing also allows you to test yourself and your limits.
After a race, you should always reflect and frame the outcome with a few important questions:
- what did I do well in my race?
- what did my race reveal about where I need more focus?
- how will this race help me improve for the next race/goal on my schedule?
It’s always helpful to have the positives outweigh the negatives, so enjoy the challenge of racing and allow each experience to serve as motivation!

Dear Lions
Placement season is on. Pressure Pressure Pressure. Many have gone forward. Some Lions are not sure what to do. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗲?
Hare - running forward now. Tortoise - running slowly - not sure how to win or the Lion - you know you are a Lion but not sure how to use your power.
𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.
The Hare and Tortoise get on a race. The Hare is running away. The Tortoise watches calmly and starts swimming to the finish line. Waits for the Hare and they cross together as friends.
What does the Lion do? Drinks coffee and then calmly completes its own race winning it.
𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻. 𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀.
You can be a Hare, Tortoise, or a Lion. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.
What do you need to do? Plan. Run the race and win. (Meaning - plan, work hard and succeed.)
You can do it dear Lions.
As always - 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 - 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀.
