After my first week of self employment, a few lessons learned from my time at Holland Homes under my mentor Thomas Johnson, P.E. have been on my mind: 1. Plan your work and then work your plan - So often we are controlled by whatever problem is demanding our effort the loudest. We fail to prioritize items based on importance but instead spend our days “fighting fires” as they arise. This prohibits us from ever finishing meaningful and important tasks. 2. Be the thermostat, not the thermometer - Don’t let the circumstance dictate how you react. Maintain emotional detachment when tense situations arise and call others up to meet your standards. A calming presence in the construction industry goes a long way. Don’t get rattled. Perform. 3. Attack problems and not people - I have never been a challenger by nature. This ideal gave me confidence to speak with authority and prioritize finding solutions over punishing someone for making a mistake. Aligning the team towards achieving the mission instead of finding someone to blame often quickly reveals a simple solution. 4. Identity is critical - During my time at Holland Homes, our team regularly said, “We’re developers with engineering expertise.” I plan to carry this mantra with me as I continue to build Samford Group. Many clients believe that the size of a city is a good indicator of when to bring on a service professional to facilitate approvals for construction and municipal projects. However, population size does not always correlate with ease of permitting processes. In fact, California, despite being home to several of the largest cities in the country and Silicon Valley, is typically the hardest state to secure approvals in, while Chicago boasts the shortest approval durations for a large population city. Our team has worked in over 1,500 jurisdictions, securing nearly 6,000 approvals, and we know firsthand that some of the hardest projects have been in small towns with NIMBYism, lack of staffing, or challenging officials. Contractors began felling trees and moving dirt earlier this year to build a highway that will allow people to bypass downtown Angier on their way between Wake and Harnett counties. Now the state has awarded another contract to finish the bypass through a rural area southwest of town. Construction on the second leg of the road will begin soon and should be finished by the fall of 2027, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. Angier expects its population to double to nearly 12,000 in the next five years, with much of that growth being shaped by the new bypass.
