From a young age, wildlife ecologist Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant developed a deep appreciation for nature by watching television shows from the comfort of her living room. Now, she is changing the conservation game by advocating for ecology and wildlife. Read more about Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant's journey and our 2024 Earth Warriors here: https://lnkd.in/eg8xYZ4f

Very useful paper by Drs Liz Bennett and John Robinson, pulling together recent research that documents the role of #primates, #elephants and other seed-dispersal agents in the ecology of tropical forests, essential for carbon sequestration and storage - #GardenersoftheForest. In the UN Decade of #ecosystemrestoration, we need to optimise the #ecosystemservices of each tract of land, which is why the illegal wildlife trade is a climate issue as well as biodiversity conservation and animal welfare concerns.

Executive leader, knowledge broker and maker. Building large collaborations and influencing thinking to solve intractable problems. Biodiversity, NRM, climate extremes, nature-based solutions, environmental policy.
A most practical guide for everyone with a garden…
From bird baths to rocks, here are seven things people put in their gardens to help wildlife, and how well they work. What animals are using your backyard? And what backyard features entice wildlife to visit? These are the questions a group of researchers from The University of Western Australia, Perth NRM and 243 citizen scientists from 30 towns and cities in southwestern Australia set out to answer. We chatted with lead researcher, Dr Bronte Van Helden, about what they found. Check out our top six takeaways in this summary of the findings, plus helpful tips for how you can set up easy features in your gardens to help wildlife. Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, NACC NRM, Bruce Webber, Paul Close, Nicki Mitchell, Leonie Valentine, Holly Kirk, Sarah Bekessy, Wildlife Queensland, Rochelle Steven, Australian Citizen Science Association take a look and please share.

The Protected Areas and One Health Task Force of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) is meeting at the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology Vetmeduni in Vienna, Austria. One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent. The Task Force is exploring how a) to integrate protected and conserved areas (PCAs) into One Health policy at all levels and b) to improve PCA management and policy by incorporating One Health themes. NEW podcast episode - the illegal wildlife trade is operating in plain sight! There is increasing interest in owning wild and exotic animals and the internet is able to serve up whatever your heart desires, even if importing these animals is illegal. In this episode I speak with Assoc Prof Phill Cassey and PhD student Charlotte Lassaline both from the School of Biological Sciences as well as from the Invasion Science and Wildlife Ecology Group at the University of Adelaide. We examine what it’s going to take to conserve and recover ecosystems in a world where wildlife is being traded not only in secret corners of the internet, but often right in front of our eyes. Recent revisions to the Endangered Species Act are emblematic of the continual pendulum of wildlife conservation policy in recent administrations. While the revised regulations seem broad in scope, the meaningful on-the-ground effects are narrower. #Environmental attorneys Sandi Snodgrass, Murray Feldman, Sarah Bordelon, and Katy Riker analyze the key changes and provide bottom-line summaries of how they may affect the regulated community. https://lnkd.in/gpCcnyTh #ESA #EnvironmentalRegulation
