Like many of my colleagues, I was laid off by Forbes Advisor today. I'm feeling nervous about the future, and the shock is still wearing off. That said, I did have a feeling this might be coming with everything that's been going on with the media industry lately. When I first had the inkling this might be on the horizon for my company, a part of me felt anxious, but another part welcomed the push into the unknown. I am ready for something new. So, if anyone in editorial or content is hiring (full-time or contract), I am open to work. I've been working as a writer and editor for nearly a decade now, and I've got experience in content strategy as well. I've worked for small startups, major publications, and everything in between. I'm smart, capable, and love turning big ideas into action. If you've got any leads, let me know! To all my colleagues who were laid off today, I wish you the best. Our team was full of talented folks, and I have no doubt you'll all move on to something even better.

I’m making it LinkedIn official: I’m #opentowork and I need your help. I’ve had mixed feelings about making this kind of announcement. When you grow up lower income, I think it can be hard to admit when you need help and can’t just reach your goals by sheer force of will and hard work. But I need a hand from my network. Happy to see my home state of Oregon make #2 on this list, but sad to see there are still zero states where women and men stand on equal ground when it comes to finances.

The gender wage gap very much still exists in 2024. And unfortunately, it's not a matter of which states have a gap but how big the gap is in each state. Forbes Advisor recently published the article "States Where Women’s Financial Situation Is Best Relative To Men’s." Worked on by the talented Amanda Claypool (writer) and Brooke Enloe (editor), this piece compares women's earnings, business ownership and unemployment to men's across the U.S. It's a great read, albeit a frustrating one, that highlights progress and problems in every state and provides tips for achieving financial security as a woman.
