We’re encouraged by significant strides in healthcare, but many LGBTQ+ youth remain unable to access much-needed mental health services. Limited access to culturally aware care providers, socio-economic barriers, and geographical limitations further complicate the situation. In this recent article, Dr. James A. Polo, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer for Carelon Behavioral Health, emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to continually train and adapt to the unique needs of these young patients. He also suggests engagement with digital solutions, including Telebehavioral Health (TBH), which bridges treatment gaps and brings experienced care providers to the LGBTQ+ community. As we raise awareness this month for inclusive and equitable healthcare for all, Dr. Polo’s article is worth the read: https://lnkd.in/eZxvVfuH #MentalHealthAwareness #HealthEquity

My latest for Healthline Media -- The Trevor Project just released its 2024 National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People. The annual report highlights how factors like home life, school environment, and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation can affect the mental health and risk of suicide for young people in the U.S. More than 18,000 LGBTQ+ young people -- 13-24 years old -- participated. Among the findings? 39% of the respondents said they seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. Zeroing in further, this includes 46% of transgender and nonbinary youth. The survey also shows that 12% of respondents attempted suicide in the past year. Big thank you to Dr. Ronita Nath, The Trevor Project's VP of research, and Dr. Chase Anderson, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, for sharing their expertise with me and putting these findings in context. The survey reveals the nuanced, complex factors at play that impact a queer young person's mental health. Minority stress is a serious issue, and oftentimes, those who have intersecting identities that can be the subject of attack and discrimination can further compound these negative mental health outcomes. For example, the poll found that young people of color considered attempting suicide at higher rates than their white peers. "Many studies have demonstrated that holding more than one minoritized identity can leave the person more vulnerable than having only one minoritized identity,” Anderson said. “Two factors noted to decrease the effects of minority stress and their outcomes are community and pride. Community can consist of people who hold those similar identities or people who are supportive and allies. Pride means the internal sense of self that someone holds, an acceptance of self, an ability to live openly and authentically.” More here: #trevorproject #LGBTQ #LGBTQmentalhealth #health #healthline #healthnews #mentalhealth

Did you know: ➡️ LGBT adults are more likely than non-LGBT adults to describe their mental health and emotional well-being as either “fair” or “poor” ➡️ LGBT adults are more likely to report being always or often anxious, depressed, or lonely over the past 12 months ➡️ About two-thirds of LGBT adults say they have experienced at least one form of discrimination in their daily life at least a few times in the past year compared to 40% of non-LGBT adults It's important to acknowledge these facts—and it's even more important that we address the root of these disparities. Luckily, there is an LGBTQ 988 service that aims to help LGBTQ people with their mental health struggles. However, about 8 in 10 LGBT and non-LGBT adults report that they have heard little or nothing about this resource! That's why it's so important this pride month to spread awareness about this helpful resource. #PrideMonth #MentalHealth #988LGBTQService

81% is a alarming statistic, which as most know is a result of the 500 plus anti-trans legislation filed in 2023 alone in the USA, constantly daily attacks by a certain political party, most media outlets, evangelicals, taking away the trans community basic needs of survival forcing well over a million people to mass migration to safe states not seen since the Great Depression era. The questions that need to be asked where is the current government support to stop these hateful injustice propaganda genocide, what as business leaders are doing to support and help put a end to these hateful policies which also effects ones business bottom line, and public presence and public préception of one’s company
“One of the study's authors, Ilan H. Meyer said, "A lack of societal recognition and acceptance of gender identities outside of the binary of cisgender man or woman and increasing politically motivated attacks on transgender individuals increase stigma and prejudice and related exposure to minority stress, which contributes to the high rates of substance use and suicidality we see among transgender people."” “Sadly, the study's findings seem to back up a May 2023 study from The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ youth anti-suicide organization. In that study, 66% of queer youth said that anti-LGBTQ+ legislation had negatively affected their mental health, and 41% of LGBTQ+ youth in the U.S. said they'd seriously considered suicide in the last year.”

Content warning: Suicide 📰 Trans adults aged 50 or older in the United States face a significantly elevated risk of contemplating suicide according to a new study. Alarmingly, more than one-quarter of respondents had contemplated ending their lives within the past year. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Aging and Mental Health, on Trans Day of Remembrance – an annual observance honouring the memory of trans people whose lives were lost due to acts of anti-trans violence. The paper’s conclusions highlight the urgent need for targeted support and interventions to reduce the prevalence of suicidal ideation within this vulnerable population. 🏳️⚧️ Trans rights are human rights. ⬇️ Read the full report below: #TransDayofRemembrance #LGBTQ #News
