When you're looking for a new product management job, don't put much focus on your current job title. Communicate what you actually do, not just your title. Product management skills overlap with nearly every area of the business: finance, marketing, legal, operations, sales, design, strategy, customer service, engineering and more. For most corporate professionals, you've probably done something that relates to product management. Have you helped create sales or marketing material for a product or service? Have you worked on customer implementation of a product? Have you come up with ideas on what markets your company can serve? Have your proposed problems that customers have? Have you build a financial model to help your company be more profitable? All of that directly ties to product management. Your title doesn't matter that much, just the work you do. ***** I'm Austin, a product management leader, ex strategy consultant, former university educator and micro-PE investor. Product Leader | I coach non-techies to land their first Product Manager role | 8+ years in Telecoms, Fintech and Edtech | UK Global Talent
I love it when people transition to a new career. It's a big BOLD step that not many are capable of. If you are transitioning to product management, here are 3 few tips to help you achieve your goal: 1. Unlearn and learn: Great product managers have certain skills you may not already possess. Be willing to learn new skills to land your dream job. You may also have to unlearn some habits that don't work for a product manager role. 2. Identify your transferable skills and lead with them: Not having hard product management skills doesn't mean you have nothing to offer. For example, if you've worked as a customer service representative, you've learned to empathise with customers, which is a valuable skill for any PM. 3. Target tech companies in your industry: If you studied Pharmacy and want to transition to product management, apply to health-tech companies; if you were a customer service rep for a telecoms company, target other telcos. You'd be at an advantage compared to other candidates because you have industry knowledge. I don't mean you should apply only to such companies, but they could be a good entry point for you. --- Hello there, I'm Obianuju. I write about becoming a Product Manager and how junior PMs (0-2 years of experience) can thrive. Follow for more.
