Got the chance to chat AI and Innovation with Gunderson Dettmer's Katie Gardner, Rachael Dugan, and the women of TechGC the other week. It's an incredible time to work in tech - we discussed how we're using AI to transform our workflows and how our companies are using it to transform industries. We're leveraging AI across Shaper Capital and our portfolio, including FractionalAI, the dev shop for difficult applications of generative AI (FractionalAI is #hiring).
Gunderson Dettmer partners Katie Gardner, Emily Cabrera, Melissa Marks and Rosie Stein joined TechGC for its Women's Collective Private Dinner, a gathering of women in TechGC's network for an evening of active discussion and networking.
At the event, Katie joined the panel, "Striking the Balance: Embracing AI Innovation while Managing Legal Risk," alongside Rachael Dugan of Indigo and Elyse Jones Benedicto of Shaper Capital.
Katie said, "It was an incredible opportunity to exchange experiences with general counsels who face the practical challenges of building, buying and using AI on a daily basis. We look forward to continuing to host these conversations that facilitate legal navigation of the uncharted territory that is AI."

We are all fairly certain that AI will be a gamechanger. The catch is that we are less certain of all the ways – good and bad – that the game will change. This time we must do our best to make sure the game changes for everyone and to the benefit of society. Gathering these powerhouse women of tech and policy to discuss, debate and direct us to an equitable path forward is a good step.
Vital Voices was proud to host Rewriting the Code: Women Transforming AI for a Better Tomorrow, with Vital Voices Council Member, Jag Gill.
With the conclusion of New York Tech week, we urge leaders to pursue ethical tech practices in the face of AI discrimination for women and minorities.
Our moderator posed the question, "When we have AI systems that are trained on male resumes and then you implement such a system to recruit, you discriminate against women. What does this mean for the future of work?"
What solutions do you see as women continue to advocate for sustainable tech practices?
Thank you to our panelists Jag Gill, Manira Alva, Janet Haven, Camille François and S. Mona Sinha for lending your expertise to this impactful conversation

I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to amplify the voices of leading women at the intersection of AI, policy, governance and ethics during New York Tech Week alongside Vital Voices Global Partnership.
Every day we are inundated with new data and insights* on how women are at greater risk than ever before: gender-based violence moving from the physical to digital (e.g. deepfake revenge porn, online harassment), GenerativeAI that discriminates against women (e.g. amplifying regressive ideas and hate speech about women, or girls' careers as homemakers with tech designed and built by men) and misinformation threatening democracy and human rights across the world, accelerating conflict and violence, and the punishment of women that stand up to dictators, like the courageous Nobel Prize Winner Maria Ressa.
Thank you to S. Mona Sinha, Camille François, Janet Haven and Manira Alva for speaking truth to power and for their service and stewardship in helping drive new laws and protections that are needed to ensure that AI acts as an enabling tool for women’s success, for advocating for gender diversity in tech leadership so that women and girls are heard, and for pushing tech companies for increased transparency and prioritization of features that are protective of women online. With these leaders at the helm, the future is bright!
*some sample data and insights:
1. The World Economic Forum reported in 2023 that women accounted for just 29 per cent of all science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workers. Although more women are graduating and entering STEM jobs today than ever before, they are concentrated in entry level jobs and less likely to hold leadership positions.
2. A study by the Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender and Leadership analysed 133 AI systems across different industries and found that about 44% of them showed gender bias, and 25% exhibited both gender and racial bias.
3. Prominent women, such as US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have had their heads placed on a naked body in order to shame them. Schools have reported cases of teenage girls being subjected to the same treatment.
4. The bulk of AI-induced job losses will affect women without college degrees because those women disproportionately populate the entry-level jobs likely to be most affected by automation. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2027 there will be 26 million fewer jobs in roles such as administrators, cashiers, payroll clerks and secretaries.
5. This cutting of women’s jobs could have a knock-on effect on their ability to thrive into old age, exacerbating the 40% pension equity gap that already exists. Women are already worried: Insights from the 2024 Global Talent Trends study show women are less likely than men to trust their organization to provide them with a new job or alternative career if their role is eliminated.

To the remarkable women in my network: When was the last time you immersed yourself solely among fellow women?
For me, that was today.
The electric buzz when women gather to trade insights, share experiences, and network is simply unparalleled.
#Relativity's "AI Bootcamp for Women in Law" provided a deep dive into the rise of generative AI, addressing algorithmic bias in the pursuit of justice, and the resilience of women facing challenges. Discussing AI's challenges and opportunities becomes even more enriching when we share experiences and uplift each other towards success.
Here's to staying in touch and continuing to show up as our authentic selves with integrity, transparency, and vulnerability. #StellarWomen#AIVisionaires#futureofwork#legalinnovation#generativeAI#artificialintelligence

This week's Algorithm for Equality live session from The Female Quotient focused on what women and girls should know about AI safety, with guest speakers Lauren Bean Buitta of Girl Security and Emily Reid of AI4ALL, and hosted by the always awesome Amber Coleman-Mortley. The OP Collab came away with the following key takeaways on this incredibly timely topic:
- In order to fight bias and make progress on safety concerns for women and girls, we need at a minimum a tech workforce that represents the entire population. The overrepresentation of men, in particular white men in the machine training and data set decision making is well known and becoming a greater issue as the tech advances without policy and procedure changes.
- 1 in 4 girls are scared to engage online because of potential mis and dis information and other threats
- We all know the prevalence of victim blaming in nondigital assault and harassment cases. There is even less support for women and girls targeted online.
At the same time we are trying to increase the amount of women in the tech space through college and professional recruitment, nonprofit efforts, and media representation, advanced tech is making the digital world increasingly hostile for women and girls. Conversations like this are vitally important to have. The OP Collab applauds the efforts of the featured nonprofits champions positive change in the space. #womenintech#internetsafety#ai

Join the conversation! The Female Quotient's weekly Algorithm for Equality hit on another important topic in yesterday's Live. Increased safety protocols and diversity representation are not in pace with current AI development only adding to the very real safety concerns for women and girls in the digital space. #ai#womenintech#genderequity
