It's my 5-year workiversary at AP! This is the longest I've ever worked at one place, though I've had three different official job titles and many, many other unofficial ones (like SEOphie and Prep Queen). Throughout those years, I have: - Contributed to hundreds of breaking news stories, either by ensuring we have the right prep ready to go, filing/editing the stories, getting them promoted across our social platforms and optimizing them for other audiences. - Worked through a career's worth of "unprecedented" moments in a front-row seat to the first draft of history. In turn, I have learned and relearned that superlatives are always problematic. - Been through two primaries and a general election. No one does elections coverage like AP. - Developed efficient systems and sustainable workflows. And iterated and innovated a lot. And while I am so proud of those accomplishments, the things I am more proud of are: - The way I have centered mental health in my daily work and with my teams. It's OK to not be OK or to need a break or to say the news is too hard. - Being an empathetic leader and someone who values the people behind the work above all else. - Leading our employee resource group focused on women's empowerment and opportunities. - All the friendships that have blossomed over the years.

In light of the layoffs and announced pivot at @Boston University's Center for Antiracist Research, I read a reflection from Dr. Phillipe Copeland, a former Center staff member who led the center’s educational and training programs. As leaders-facilitators-capacity builders--you won't be surprised at one of his first observations: "It wasn’t long before I ran into obstacles. I noticed that leadership would make decisions that either weren’t adequately explained or made no sense. I received mixed messages and contradictory directives. I would make recommendations based upon my expertise that went unheeded. I would go to meetings and get the sense I was in a class with students who hadn’t done the reading. I would express concerns and it would go nowhere." We know that the only way to make and sustain change is to LIVE that change. Every.single.person. needs to be reflective of the principles of what we're doing here. And if leaders--the individual humans, not a generic grouping of 'leadership'--if leaders do not embody and breathe that vision, the vision will go nowhere. That means we each need to DO it. Not just talk about it. True liberation, true empowerment, must come from ourselves as individuals. We must mirror and model that in each and every interaction. And then--even if leaders are in fact embodying their spoken values--the university context is not the place to support them. As a former VP of a university-hosted center, let me say: >Universities are not structured to support centers of social innovation. That would require permitting leaders to access their full funding rather than pay the university outrageous sums for "indirect" costs. That would require university resources to actually be directed toward supporting the infrastructure and management of centers like this so they can become successful. The current status of the Center for Antiracist Research is wildly disappointing, but not at all surprising. https://lnkd.in/e4nJGEy2.
