Home to amazing, long-lived and alien-like life, we’re only now beginning to understand what lives in the deepest reaches of our ocean. We shouldn’t destroy this remote wilderness with deep sea mining--and we don’t have to. Read our new report with PIRG and Frontier Group (Non-Profit Think Tank) on why we don’t need to destroy the remote, mysterious deep sea for critical minerals: https://lnkd.in/e23HnRZw

The deep ocean is one of most remote places on Earth, an alien and amazing place science is only beginning to discover. And we could destroy vast swaths of it, all for metals we throw in the trash every day. In my new report with Nathan Proctor, Tony Dutzik and James Horrox, we explore what harms would come from seabed mining--and why we don't need it for our transition to a renewable energy future. Because the reality is, deep sea mining is not the solution: unless we change how we use these "critical minerals," we will always need to find a new wilderness to plunder. Instead, let's invest in the real solution--reducing, repairing, reusing, recycling, and reimaging devices that use critical minerals--and reject efforts to make ever more extraction seem like the way to a sustainable future.

Australia's mining sector has long relied on a 'learning by doing' strategy, but is it costing us our environment? This insightful piece authored by Griffith University’s Professor Matthew Currell and Flinders University’s Professor Adrian Werner, explores the environmental impacts of our large-scale mining operations and questions the effectiveness of our current approach. #Mining #Environment #Sustainability #EnvironmentalEngineering #GriffithUniveristy @Griffith Sciences https://lnkd.in/dAhsnJng
Australia’s ‘learning by doing’ approach to managing large mines is failing the environment

Great to discuss geology with engaged and knowledgeable engineering students!!We will be hosting Diba J and colleagues on site soon enough for a closer look at our drilling and core shed to learn a bit more about “the other side” of the industry. #rmit #geology #engineering #afghanistantowinthecricketworldcup
International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) Highlights: Melbourne Mining Club Foundation Members and Sponsors are great supporters of the club’s student initiatives. Southern Cross Gold ‘s Nicholas Mead explains the finer points of the exciting Sunday Creek #gold and #antimony project to Diba J and her RMIT University #engineering student sisters. Nick and Lisa Gibbons were flat out on day one at #imarc2023 fielding inquiry about recent stunning drill results in the Victorian antimony triangle. Nice work $SXG and thanks to Agnico Eagle Mines Limited ‘s John Landmark for donating the student ticket. Victorian companies and MMC Foundation Members encouraging the next generation of mining leaders, backing up the leadership of Gekko Systems in this student program support.

President, Pacific Opportunity Capital Ltd. * Director of Silver North Resources Ltd. and Avrupa Minerals Ltd.
I've made the most profit from supporting and buying resource stocks in down markets like we are in now that are very long in the tooth. It's definitely not for the faint of heart but if you see companies that actually have some strong drill results but are in a weak market, watch for the opportunities to buy them. The funds that we've earned from doing this have supported our staff and their families, some charities related to supporting local kids, and they have gone into supporting new entrepreneurial ventures started by smart people. Lock the Gate In shocking, though unfortunately not surprising news, a new report released today* has revealed that large areas of #koala #habitat are located directly on mining leases for some of the largest coal mine expansion proposals in Queensland. Using state-of-the-art satellite mapping technology combined with government data, the CQUniversity study shows how the mining lease areas for 12 planned coal projects in Central Queensland overlap with habitat critical for koalas’ survival. It’s the first time a report has assessed the cumulative impact of coal mining on endangered koalas in Central Queensland - which make up one-fifth of the state’s koalas. Coal and gas expansions threaten to send koalas over the precipice by fueling climate change and destroying vital habitats. But we don’t want to imagine an Australia without koalas, so we’re fighting back! Lock the Gate is working on the front line of the coal and gas expansion across Queensland and NSW. Colin, will you donate to our Koala Protection Fund to help save koalas from extinction? Donate Now (https://lnkd.in/gEUXfmUc ) (https://lnkd.in/g24CPjFu)
