Joined #cgtn Radio The World Today to discuss the Haley-DeSantis debate among other US election topics. What's the main takeaway from the latest Haley-DeSantis debate? They damaged each other, which doesn’t help either vis-à-vis Trump, who they’re both fearful of attacking as forcefully as they attack each other. On the whole, Haley is out-polling DeSantis, and I don’t think this will change. What’s interesting is that DeSantis is a more natural fit for the Republican base if Trump wasn’t in the race, while Haley is a better fit to win the center and swing voters, which would be necessary in the general election. Why do you think Trump again decided not to participate? Instead, he on Wednesday appeared at a televised town hall meeting in the same state of Iowa at the same time. He has no incentive to debate. He’s leading the other candidates, he doesn’t want to put himself on the same stage, to consider them equals. Nor does he want to expose himself to difficult or sensitive questions. By scheduling his own event at the same time, he tried to monopolize the time slot and control the presentation... How do you look at the decision by former NJ governor Chris Christie, an ardent Trump critic, to drop out of the primary? Some people say his move might help consolidate support for Haley. Anti-Trump Republicans, including NH Governor Sununu, had been calling on Christie to quit to help Haley, who's narrowed Trump’s lead in NH but likely too, little too late. Christie's offered no endorsement yet. Funny--despite all the bad blood between them, Trump responded to Christie's withdrawal, saying, quote: “I hear Chris Christie is dropping out of the race today—I might even get to like him again!” It looks increasingly likely that there will be a Biden vs. Trump race in 2024. People have long been talking about a perceived gerontocracy in the US politics today. Your thoughts? Some think Hillary Clinton's stranglehold over the #dnc during her run against Trump helped her sideline up-and-coming talent, and later this benefited Biden. Another possibility is that some popular and charismatic young Democrats are considered too radical by the Democratic establishment, and been suppressed variously, as we also saw in Congress under Pelosi. But we can see these fault-lines today, for example, with younger Democrats troubled by Biden’s firm support for #israel despite the bloodshed in #gaza. Republican candidates are usually older, the exception being the younger Bush; but he was running on his dad's name, supported by old hands from the elder's Administration. Trump's old but he’s also idiosyncratic: he’s perceived as offering a new type of Republican militancy, one that was less committed to old ideas than old people, primarily in the areas of #foreignpolicy, trade, the economy, and so on, though on social issues like abortion rights, gay rights, minority rights, gun rights, and so on, he moved policy and courts to the right.

Latest podcast episode live with pollster/author Patrick Ruffini talking his new book PARTY OF THE PEOPLE, about changing political coalitions & the new, more blue-collar & more multi-racial GOP. https://lnkd.in/gHT-VUHt Patrick Ruffini, pollster at Echelon Strategies, returns to talk about his new book (released today, 11/7/23) PARTY OF THE PEOPLE - on the transition of the Republican Party from being dominated by wealthy, suburban white voters to a more blue-collar and increasingly-multi-racial coalition. In this conversation, Patrick lays out the data behind these shifts, what is driving the GOP's new-found success with blue-collar voters, why this movement came as a surprise to many, the balance of economic vs. cultural priorities, how Latino/AAPI/Black voters are increasingly persuadable audiences in elections, and expecations as to how these shifts will continue to define American politics for the forseeable future

We're all pretty bored with the #election coverage aren't we! So, tomorrow will see the voting start and by Friday morning, a new government in place, but how will YOU vote this time around? Whilst most of us want and expect a change from the lies, corruption and misogyny of the last 14 years, is #Labour really the answer or just more of the same? The problem I believe, lays at the heart of whip-controlled 2-party politics, so only a vote for REAL change can possibly provide a solution. That is why I will be voting for Abi McGuire our local #independent candidate tomorrow. There are over 450 independents standing across the UK and it has been nicknamed #IndependentsDay as a result! It's NOT a 'wasted vote' in my opinion, it's a vote for for change and to let the political parties all know, we want an end to party based politics and to re-educate people who just vote for London based figureheads, rather than someone who truly wants to fight for their constituents. Listen to my latest podcast to hear more. https://lnkd.in/eE6m_jXF

We're talking about the intense political showdown taking place right here in the UK. In this episode, Jacki and Lyle discuss Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's dramatic election announcement in a rainstorm outside Number 10 Downing Street – a moment that's become iconic for the Conservative campaign. They explore the crucial role of visuals in election campaigns and how the image of a soaked Sunak is shaping public perception. They also dive into Nigel Farage's tactics with Reform UK, including the controversial milkshake incident in Clacton and the theories surrounding it. Jacki draws fascinating parallels between Farage and Trump’s messaging strategies. With just a few weeks to go until the election, this episode is packed with insights you won't want to miss!
