How do we achieve density in our suburban places and enhance character? Located on a complex corner site in Ealing, we delivered 20 homes for MTVH inside a staggered building arrangement that mitigated constraints whilst responding to the built and heritage context. Our analysis showed that a combination of existing trees and policy constraints left 60% of the site unbuildable, requiring a unique sculptural approach to utilise what remained. The result? - 100% dual aspect accommodation - Retention of Class-A trees, informing a stepped form - A sculptural reflection of three local churches, unlocking 4-storeys in a 2-storey area - New homes on a site previously thought undevelopable Ealing described the scheme as: “a high-quality design that is a well thought response to a very difficult site, creating attractive buildings, that have a strong character." 📍 Ancoats Urban Village Embark on a journey through the remediation of the Artisan residential complex nestled on the edge of Great Ancoats Street, where modern luxury meets stringent safety standards. This project was a meticulous remediation endeavour aimed at aligning the structure with the latest fire safety regulations. The two challenges we faced head-on: balconies requiring a domestic load and walkways demanding heavy load support. Facing the daunting challenge of blending aesthetics with functionality, we collaborated closely with AEW Architects and Insulated Render Systems (Scotland) Ltd The heart of our solution lies in the innovative BalcaSmart® Aluminium system from the IGNO® range, meticulously engineered to seamlessly integrate with balcony steels, facilitating swift and efficient installation. With its robust design, BalcaSmart® Aluminium ensures that balconies remain safe and secure, irrespective of the demanding design and performance criteria encountered. Yet, our journey was not without its hurdles. Confronted with the constraints of low threshold heights, we opted for JH50 Joist Hangers, replacing traditional timber joists with aluminium counterparts. This strategic decision not only met the project's structural demands but also ensured a flush alignment with the steel frame, harmonising form with function. Want to know more?
