Pedestrian passageway+place, Downtown Birmingham, MI, metro Detroit, Lake Belt Megaregion. We have an extensive pedestrian network that cuts through city blocks throughout downtown Birmingham. These pedestrian passageways allow people to walk through the downtown, easier and quicker than having to walk completely around some of the larger urban blocks in the district The latest one that was created, is a gap established when the recently built Daxton Hotel was completed. This walking passage has been evolving nicely into a pleasant pedestrian place, with the addition of a series of elements and a business condition. When we first approved this building, the Daxton Hotel, we saw this small sliver space between two buildings as a simple walking path that connected our main street, Woodward Avenue, and an existing pedestrian path Tucked away in the mid block area, behind the new hotel. Overtime, some landscaping and lighting was added and then bench seating. Facing the passageway, existed the kitchen and baking area for the Hotel services. Along the pathway, Windows have been placed that look into the kitchen and as you walked through, you can see in and catch a glimpse of fresh croissants, and other delicious baked goods being created. Recent additions to the passageway include artwork on the wall adding color and interest to the walking path and create an enhancement that gives it visual interest. the latest edition includes some overhead light strings that give the space some distinctive interest, and a new pop up business, where the hotel is selling ice cream out of one of the small windows near the kitchen. All of this has led to this small passageway, that was simply a place where you could walk through originally, to become a delightful, hidden space where you can get dessert, treats, and hang out a bit A great example of people oriented Urbanism, evolving, and becoming an added asset to a Downtown District.
