Are you weighing the pros and cons of contract engineers versus permanent staff? 🤔 Here's a breakdown for you. Contract engineers offer a temporary solution tailored to specific projects. Their experience and expertise mean they can hit the ground running, making them ideal for short-term needs or when you require a specialised skill set that doesn't exist within your organisation. On the other hand, permanent staff are the pillars of your company's culture and long-term success. They provide stability, help maintain institutional knowledge, and can be more invested in your company's future. Plus, their continuous development can propel your company's capabilities forward. However, this isn't an either/or situation. The best strategy often involves a blend of both, giving you the flexibility of contractors along with the stability of permanent employees. Each business will have unique needs, so consider factors like budget, project duration, and company culture when deciding. How do you balance your team's composition? Engineering Recruitment Consultant | Unearthing engineering talent and linking them to their dream career, team and leader.
At Rarekind our Engineering team is noticing a shift. There is a surge of Engineering contract roles. This trend got me thinking about the many perks that come with being a contractor ⬇ 🚴♂️ Flexibility: Contractors enjoy a heightened level of control over their work schedules, granting them the freedom to tailor their work-life balance to their preferences. 🔆 Variety of Work: One of the most appealing aspects of contracting is the diversity of projects it offers. Helping to keep work engaging and fosters the continuous development of valuable skills. ✈ Higher Earnings: Traditionally, contractors command higher rates than their full-time counterparts, providing them with the potential to boost their income. 💥 Networking: Perhaps my favourite benefit, contract work provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of clients and industry professionals. This extensive network can open doors to exciting prospects and invaluable connections. 👨💻 Skills Development: With different clients and a wide array of projects, contractors are constantly exposed to new challenges. Perfect for ground for skill enhancement and upskilling. While contract work may not align with everyone's preferred work model, it's essential to recognise that it's far from a bleak choice. Instead, it brims with abundant opportunities waiting to be seized. Maintaining contact between trades is essential to being a contractor. You won't have all the answers but you need to know where to find them, who and what to ask. Then you need to make sure that everyone has all of the relevant information, your team cannot be operating in silos as each piece of the project will impact another. This means staying on top of all aspects of the job and having trades you can trust AND that trust you.

What's the WORST that could happen when you start working with a contractor? At the end of the day, this is unique to the relationship you have with the contractor and the scope of your work together. Especially if you're planning to work on recurring or multiple projects together, here's my best piece of advice for creating a contract that will protect both of you... Go on a date! Yup. Schedule a date to talk about alllllllll the possible ways the contract could go wrong. This is so much easier to do when the relationship is new and filled with energy! And, trust me, mapping out all the things that could go wrong and building out contract language to protect you both will make your working relationship even more impactful to your business! Here are some things to talk about: - What happens if you ghost me? - What happens if I don't pay you? - What happens if the quality of work isn't as expected? - What happens if one of us makes an error that costs the other one $? - What will we do if one of us gets ill? #HiringTips #Contractors #KeepWhatYouEarn

⚡ Contractor Myths Busted: #3 - "Our application is too complex. A Contractor will take too long to get up to speed" ⚡ Contractors do not have superpowers, but what they do have are a very particular set of skills- skills acquired over a very long career, skills that make them able to be effective quickly on virtually any project (Quote: Liam Neeson... kind of! ) 🎬 ✅ Contractors are highly accustomed to swapping between projects, jumping in halfway, and getting up to speed quickly. ✅ They know that each day they are not productive represents a significant cost to their client, and their professionalism means they seek to minimise lost days and demonstrate their value as quickly as possible. ✅ Contractors have a wealth of specialist knowledge and this in-depth understanding and vast commercial experience make them more than capable of adding value and understanding your domain, and quickly. ✅ Generally speaking, this is not their first rodeo. They have jumped onto new projects and ramped up quickly time and time again. It is a skill they have honed over time, across varying domains and different applications/platforms. ✅ Sometimes, in the days leading up to a contract start date, a contractor may be happy to familiarise themselves with documentation, your domain, project specifics, etc, and can do this before getting started allowing them to be effective even more quickly. For a conversation about engaging contractors and the vital role they could play in your upcoming projects, please feel free to give me a shout: 📞 02896 935 509 📧 j.johnston@mcsgroup.jobs
